World of Warcraft loses player items 😔 - another reason to support blockchain tech in web3 gaming

Web2 gaming was rocked about a month ago when some sort of glitch in World of Warcraft caused over 1000 Guilds to lose currency and items, including some legacy items that can’t be acquired anymore!

The WoW team has able to restore some, but not all of the missing items. And apparently, they recently declared their job done and that there was no more they could do to help the affected players. This bug affected only a small portion of the player population in WoW, but if you’re one of those with deleted items that you can never get back, it feels bad man!

But, you know, this seems like an issue that could be fixed with NFTs and/or on-chain data storage — something that is right up the alley of web3 gaming!

Now, we should note that not all blockchain games store all of their player owned items on-chain or as NFTs. However, the more valuable items usually are. And this seems a pretty clear cut case of how blockchain technology and the concept of true player ownership could have made a huge difference.

With the increase in playable MMOs in the web3 gaming space, will games like World of Warcraft start to decline?

HMSTR Tokens Fall from the Sky

The much anticipated airdrop from Hamster Kombat began on Thursday (September 26th). And though this was expected to potentially clog up the TON chain as HMSTR tokens were distributed to over 130 million players, overall, the technical side of things has gone well.

However, there seem to be quite a few, very vocal players who are angry, feeling that they did not get enough reward for their time. Which is probably true, as many people who played since the beginning report receiving tokens worth around $10 USD. But with 130 million eligible players, anyone expecting a significant windfall from a free to play, ‘tap to earn’ game might need to rethink their expectations in regards to web3 gaming. Hamster Kombat even said from the beginning that one of their goals was to get the HMSTR token into as many hands as possible.

But despite the complaints, HMSTR value has held steady after the expect3ed, initial price decline we always see with these airdrops. HMSTR is trading on several centralized markets with a market cap of about $430 million. And Binance is even already offering futures on HMSTR for those who like to take a bit more risk.

Hamster Kombat will likely see a significant decline in active players now. And the negative sentiment may even affect player activity in other Telegram games. But what we really want to see, is whether these games can maintain a playerbase after their play to airdrop campaigns, hopefully with a fun, engaging experience.
