“That’s an outfit” M remarked, as he walked into the kitchen on Sunday evening. It wasn’t directed at me; I was in something so predictable I can’t remember it, but probably involved an elasticated waistband. He was referring to the little blonde women teetering around on my laptop screen, one of whom was wearing a shimmering beaded ball gown with a matching cape. “Oh that’s nothing,” I replied, “they frequently sell houses in little more than bikinis”. I haven’t lived with a television for over a decade, but that doesn’t mean my tastes in television don’t skew towards trash. I’ve been watching Selling Sunset since it launched, in the late winter of 2019 - what felt like whole seasons before people became obsessed with it during the pandemic, for understandable reasons. And I’m still clinging onto the new seasons now, while I suspect that while those viewers have found better things to do with their time. New Selling Sunset episodes are released on an annual basis, and so for a few days a year I will go on a bleary-eyed binge, compulsively swept away into a land of blue skies and boob jobs, unerringly perfect teeth and wine cellars, unable to tear myself away even while washing up or putting sausages in the oven...
