Good Morning! On this day in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire raged for two days, killing up to 300 people, destroying more than 17,000 buildings, leaving 100,000 homeless, and causing an estimated $200 million in damages.

Hurricane Milton Upgraded to Category 5

Hurricane Milton has strengthened to a Category 5 storm with 175 mph winds, threatening Florida's Gulf Coast with potential 12-foot storm surges, and is expected to make landfall near Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

Officials are preparing for what could be the largest evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Florida.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 51 counties and announced preparations, including stockpiling water and fuel.

President Biden signed a disaster declaration Monday, authorizing federal aid for over 30 Florida counties.

Mission Tests Planetary Defense Plan

The European Space Agency's Hera mission, aimed at planetary defense against killer asteroids, successfully launched on SpaceX's Falcon 9 from Florida, beginning its journey to a distant asteroid system over 60 million miles away.

The Hera mission is part of a global effort to develop a defense system following NASA's successful 2022 test, which redirected a rogue asteroid by intentionally crashing a spacecraft into it.

When it arrives two years from now, Hera will examine NASA’s crash site to confirm if the impact was successful. It will also analyze surface minerals and gravity, which will help refine future missions. You can see mission images here.

List: The Hardest-Working States in America

A recent study ranked North Dakota as the hardest-working state in America, while West Virginia was identified as the least hardworking state.

To determine which states have the hardest-working Americans, personal finance company WalletHub compared 50 states using ten key indicators, including average workweek hours, the share of workers with multiple jobs, and average daily leisure time.

According to the data, the Midwestern states, mostly major agricultural areas, are the hardest-working, with ratings decreasing toward both coasts.

Other states in the top five were Alaska, Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota. You can see how hard your state works here.
