Austin Kleon - How to draw what is invisible

In this week’s newsletter: drawing what’s invisible, growing without schooling, ear and eye candy, and more...

A newsletter from the desk of Austin Kleon
how to draw what is invisible

Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. How to draw what is invisible

  2. My kids were too busy reading their own books to tolerate me reading it to them aloud, but I loved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. (I particularly liked the Mock Turtle’s homeschooling curriculum.) I’m now reading Through The Looking-Glass, and might pick up The Annotated Alice next. (If you’re having trouble reading, here’s what’s working for me.)

  3. What I learned from reading the first nineteen issues of John Holt’s homeschooling newsletter, Growing Without Schooling.

  4. The British Library asks children to write miniature books in lockdown. (I’ve made close to 50 zines in the past few months... try making some out of junk mail!)

  5. Need a little breath of fresh air? Join Monty Don as he heads out to feed the chickens.

  6. Kevin Kelly’s 68 bits of unsolicited advice. (Remember Steinbeck: “No one wants advice — only corroboration.”)

  7. Christoph Niemann on the unexpected solace of learning to play the piano. (“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”)

  8. Ear candy: the new Perfume Genius album is fantastic. (Also: more Peel Sessions than you could probably ever listen to.)

  9. Eye candy: we binged the raunchy and “occasionally true” Catherine The Great mini-series The Great this week. (It was created by Tony McNamara, who co-wrote the movie The Favourite, so if you liked that, you might like this.)

  10. A worthy mission statement: “to be fundamentally more interested in finding nourishment than identifying poison.”
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy some of my books.

If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can read previous issues and subscribe here.

xoxo,

Austin

PS. I’ve noticed a great uptick of interest in my books in the past couple months. (Print magazine ran excerpts from all three books in the trilogy.) Many thanks to y’all for reading and sharing.
