The Sneaky Token

In a move to combat cryptocurrency fraud, the FBI revealed that it had created its own Ethereum-based token, NexFundAI, as part of an investigation into price manipulation within crypto markets. The agency worked with cooperating witnesses to develop the token, which was used to uncover widespread fraudulent practices.

The investigation led to significant charges from both the SEC and the DOJ. The SEC charged three market makers and nine individuals for artificially inflating the prices of crypto assets. Meanwhile, the DOJ filed charges against 18 individuals and entities for fraud and manipulation.

The investigation has resulted in charges against leaders of several cryptocurrency companies. Among those implicated are ZMQuant, CLS Global, and MyTrade, who allegedly engaged in “wash trading” on behalf of NexFundAI, not realizing it was an FBI creation. Wash trading involves creating fake transactions to simulate market activity, misleading investors.

To date, the DOJ has recovered $25 million in fraudulent profits, which will be returned to investors.

The Portuguese Proposal

Portugal has a big problem: thousands of young people are leaving the country, while the population is aging and birth rates are dropping. To tackle this, the new center-right government, led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, has come up with a bold plan—super low taxes for anyone under 35.

According to The Guardian, the proposal offers a tax-free first year for young workers earning less than €28,000 ($30,650). After that, they’ll get a 75% tax cut until year four, a 50% cut from years five to seven, and a final 25% reduction until year ten. The idea? Make Portugal a more attractive place for young talent to stay.

Since 2008, over 360,000 young people aged 15 to 35 have left Portugal, driven away by high taxes, low wages (image below by Eurostat), poor working conditions, and rising housing costs. The government hopes this new tax plan will help reverse that trend and keep more young people in the country.
