Pet-focused Vetted Capital targets $150M+ first-time VC fund
(Stefan Cristian Cioata/Getty Images)
Demand for pet care has cooled from the pandemic-induced puppy frenzy. But at least one firm sees a value-hunting opportunity in the downturn.

Vetted Capital aims to raise between $150 million and $300 million for its first fund, according to marketing materials obtained by PitchBook. The firm has secured about $60 million in commitments from LPs.

GPs Charles Tapp and Aaron Wallace are banking that their backgrounds in pet food and veterinary care, as well as a resurgence in consumer pet spending, can boost their long-term returns.

M&A market is picking up steam
The M&A recovery is hitting its stride, according to our Q3 2024 Global M&A Report, sponsored by Liberty GTS, RSM and RBC Capital Markets. The first three quarters saw a marked acceleration in M&A activity—total deal value rose more than 27% from last year, and deal count increased over 13%.

And PE is finally getting in on the action, benefitting from a "stealth" rate-cut cycle as big banks have returned to the deal lending market. PE's share of M&A deal value climbed to over 41% year-to-date, bouncing back to its five-year average after slipping in 2023.

Have specialty physician acquisitions become a 'contrarian' bet?
Dealmakers have so soured on physician practice management companies that these deals are being referred to as a "contrarian play" at industry events, according to our latest analyst note, which recaps a trio of recent healthcare conferences in New York.

Here's the rub: Valuations for PPMs—like dental, vision and mental health practices—would have to drop before buyers see significant value in the sector. And that would require PE sellers to lock in lower returns.

A better place to look for value may well be add-ons in segments where competition has declined. Take healthcare IT, where startups are increasingly open to selling to private equity.

Europe's PE-backed companies see an IPO recovery
(Picture Alliance/Getty Images)
After two consecutive years of decline, Europe has seen an uptick in PE-backed IPOs this year.

So far there have been 15 PE-backed IPOs involving European-based companies this year, worth a total nearly €42 billion. Listing activity is still a far cry from the 2021 peak, though, and not all companies are listing in Europe.
