The best dishwasher detergents

Our four picks for the best dishwasher detergent, next to stacks of white bowls, mugs, bowls and plates.

If you typically open your dishwasher to find still-spattered plates, cloudy glasses, and dull cutlery, the first thing you should do is consider using a new detergent. This is especially true if you currently use a liquid detergent, which we’ve found uniformly cleans worse than pods or powders.

A good detergent can significantly improve the cleaning performance of an average dishwasher and even boost the power of an excellent machine. After our latest round of testing, we have a new favorite powder detergent: an impressive cleaner that is the least expensive of all the ones we recommend.

This week on the pod: Life is too loud

On this week’s episode of The Wirecutter Show, senior staff writer Lauren Dragan shares how to tell if you’re at risk for hearing loss—and how to reduce noises at home, while you’re commuting, at concerts, and more. One tip? When you’re wearing headphones, follow Lauren’s 60-for-60 rule: Keep them at 60% of the volume for 60 minutes, and then take a break from listening to give your ears a rest.

One last thing: A great deal on one of the best menstrual cups we’ve tested

Our pick for best menstrual cup for high cervixes, the DivaCup.

It only takes three menstrual cycles for a reusable cup or disc to save you money. And beyond that, switching to a reusable method reduces the number of disposable tampons or pads you’re tossing in the trash.

If you’re considering making the switch, the best option for you largely depends on your anatomy. Our guide can help you find the right one for you. And right now, we’re seeing one of our recommendations on sale: an easy-to-grip cup that folds easily and comes in three sizes.

It’s $10 off→
