The lawsuit was eventually thrown out, but the yearslong legal battle cost The Intercept more than $200,000 in legal fees. There is an increasingly common strategy by billionaires to weaponize libel law against journalism — and in the Donald Trump era, we can expect the legal attacks on the free press to rise.
