Poems for LGBTQ+ Pride Month

This month is LGBTQ+ Pride Month. For the occasion, we’ve put together a collection of poems suitable for kids written by LGBTQ poets, as well as lesson plans including “I Invite My Parents to a Dinner Party” by Chen Chen.

Monday, May 4

The Red Sweater” by Joseph O. Legaspi
Resurrection” by Sally Wen Mao
Social Distancing” by Juan Felipe Herrera
Senior Discount” by Ali Liebegott
This month’s poetic term is political poetry, or poetry that is related to activism, protest, and social concern, or that is commenting on social, political, or current events. Read examples of protest poetry and poems pertaining to the Black Lives Matter movement.
In support of the global protests, National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Jason Reynolds and fellow children’s authors and activists Kwame Alexander and Jacqueline Woodson are leading the #Kidlit Rally for Black Lives, a virtual gathering of more than twenty five authors, artists, and publishers. Hosted by The Brown Bookshelf, it will take place live on Thursday, June 4, beginning at 7 p.m. ET, on Zoom and their Facebook page. Following a rally addressing young people in grades K–12, participants will hold another event at 7:45 p.m. geared toward parents, teachers, and librarians.
Teachers, thank you for your work bringing poetry into the classroom year-round. We’re happy to be able to offer hundreds of free lesson plans, essays, and other resources, and we wish you and your students health and safety.
