According to levels.fyi, the average software engineer salary in the USA is $175k. Crazy.

So if you're interested in switching to software engineering, here's my suggestions (as a dev with 15yrs experience):

1. Do an "Intro to Computer Science" course: this will give you context on programming languages, databases and the hardware they run on (potential course)
2. Learn HTML and CSS: this lets you to build a simple website (potential course)
3. Learn JavaScript: this lets you to build a more advanced (interactive) website. JavaScript is an interesting language as you can use it on the frontend and backend (called NodeJS) - dw, you'll learn about this in step #1 (potential course)
4. Learn Databases + SQL: this will allow you to build an even more advanced website, which stores data long-term (potential course)
5. Learn a JavaScript framework: although most websites use JavaScript, they're usually built with a JavaScript framework (e.g. ReactJS). If JavaScript is the raw ingredient, ReactJS is the meal prep kit (potential course)
6. Build a Passion Project: using your new skills, build a project you are interested in. Something fun. Something that you'll want to finish.
7. Build Another Project: Honestly, the best way to learn - is to do imo.
8. Apply and Interview: create a 1 page resume (with all your software skills in a table at the top) and start applying (potential interview prep)

It's not impossible to make the switch (from a completely unrelated field) in 3-6 months 💪
