TikTok banned in India along with 58 other mostly Chinese apps amid border tensions

Article
  • TikTok has been banned in India, along with 58 other mostly Chinese apps, as tensions between the two countries continue.
  • The Indian government has now said that it would block the app - along with 58 others, including Alibaba's UC Browser and Tencent's WeChat, as well as games such as Clash of Kings.
  • The 59 blocked apps are "Prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order", the Ministry of Information Technology said.
  • Members of the public had also voiced concern about the way certain apps use the data they collect, the ministry claimed.
  • The government announcement made no reference to those tensions or to the fact that most of the apps had been developed in China.
  • Last year, TikTok was briefly banned in India over concerns that it was being used to distribute pornography.
  • The movement to delete Chinese apps amid the ongoing tensions between the two countries had been supported by citizens on social media, as well as a spokesperson for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party.

Reddit bans The Donald forum as part of major hate speech purge

Article
  • Reddit says it is banning its controversial subreddit channel r/The Donald, one of the company's largest political communities and a longstanding hub of support for President Trump, along with 2000 other subreddit groups and users that violate new content policies aimed at hate speech.
  • What they're saying: In a conversation with reporters, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said that the company tried everything it could to avoid outright banning The Donald subreddit channel for years, but the group continued to violate the site's content policies.
  • He said the company tried to approach The Donald users in good faith over the years, but they continued to break Reddit's rules, like upvoting more rule-breaking content and antagonizing Reddit and other Reddit communities.
  • Details: With the bans, Reddit has also announced changes to its content policy, including more explicit rules barring hate speech to ensure that the platform is "Welcoming" and not weaponizing.
  • The big picture: Reddit has for years faced intense pressure to take action on The Donald.
  • Earlier this month, former Reddit president Ellen Pao ripped Huffman for "Amplifying" racism and hate and called on him to ban The)Donald.
  • Earlier this month, Republicans in Congress wrote a letter to Reddit threatening to take action against the tech company if it tried to censor the The Donald.

Apple News just lost

Article
  • The New York Times has announced that, as of today, it will no longer be distributing articles in the Apple News app, making it one of the largest publishers to end its association with Apple's publishing platform.
  • In a memo announcing the change, Meredith Kopit Levien, chief operating officer at the Times, said the company wants "a direct path for sending those readers back into our environments, where we control the presentation of our report, the relationships with our readers, and the nature of our business rules." She added that the paper's "Relationship with Apple News does not fit within these parameters."
  • While Apple has had a tougher time getting publishers to sign on for its monthly News Plus subscription - which costs $9.99 per month and offers access to a variety of magazines and newspapers - the free version of Apple News has offered a much larger array of news.
  • Apple News works differently than most other news aggregators: the top articles are curated by a team of human reporters, not algorithms, and Apple is strict about what news sources it allows into the app.
  • Earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that Apple News has over 125 million daily users, although the company has yet to announce exactly how many subscribers pay for the premium Apple News Plus service.
  • For its part, Apple said in a statement to the Times that it "Only offered Apple News a few stories a day," so there shouldn't be too much of a change in the overall content for readers.
  • Update June 29th, 3:40pm: Added that The Guardian has since rejoined Apple News in March after leaving in 2017.
