5 Simple Steps to Clear Skin – Modern Renaissance Man Skincare Routine
How This E-Mail Will Change Your Actions: You Will Develop an Effective Skincare Routine Resulting in Healthier, Clearer Skin, Increased Physical Attractiveness and Unshakeable Confidence.

The Importance of Skincare
People with naturally clear skin will likely read this E-Mail headline and immediately hit delete – Skincare routine? Who cares? I thought this was an E-Mail list for Men!
People who struggle or have struggled with Acne, however, will open and read it immediately.
I fall into the second category.
Those with naturally clear skin will never understand that the worst part about acne isn’t that it decreases your attractiveness, but that it cripples your confidence.
Every time you look in the mirror it is the first thing you notice, so you assume it is also the first thing everybody else notices.
You don’t see any way a girl could find you attractive because YOU don’t find you attractive.
This creates a vicious negative self-enforcing cycle.
Acne decreases your physical attractiveness and confidence. This makes you less attractive to women. Being less attractive to women makes you less confident. Being less confident makes you less attractive to women and the cycle repeats.
My hope is that this E-Mail prevents at least one young man from dealing with this cycle of self-doubt, wondering if he is good looking enough to go after that 9 at the bar.
Follow this routine, keep your skin clear and healthy and I you will be, Young King.

The Modern Renaissance Man Skincare Routine
The Modern Renaissance Man Skincare Routine consists of 5 Rules (Plus a Bonus) that you need to follow to maintain clear skin.
Any time I get a breakout it is because I break one of these rules.
(I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice, please consult a physician before making any changes related to your health)
1. Live a Healthy Lifestyle – Nutrition, Training, Hydration & Stress
Clear skin is as much about what you to do you skin as it is about what you do to what’s underneath it.
The more consistently you are able to live a healthy lifestyle – Eating Clean, Training Regularly, Staying Hydrated and Avoiding Stress, the better your skin will be.
Eat Clean – Focus on eating single ingredient whole foods (meat, potatoes, eggs, avocados) while avoiding fried foods (vegetable oils), refined sugars and alcohol.
Pay attention to anything you eat that appears to be linked to your breakouts (within the last few days). For example, dairy tends to cause me to breakout so I avoid it as much as possible.
Train Regularly – Training promotes blood flow providing oxygen to the skin which helps promote collagen production and new skin cells.
Sweating opens your pores allowing anything clogging them to be washed away. Make sure you wash your face after working out (water only) to make sure the sweat, dirt and oil don’t clog your pores and cause acne.
Stay Hydrated – Staying hydrated keeps your skin from drying out and producing more oil as a response potentially resulting in breakouts.
Decrease Stress – This one is tough. Life is going to be stressful, especially if you are ambitious. Stress increases cortisol levels and can cause increased oil production in your skin resulting in acne.
You need to do what you can do keep stress low (meditate, practice mental toughness, exercise regularly etc) but also make sure you do not compound stress with other poor choices (specifically poor Nutrition and touching your face - a bad habit I used to have when stressed.)
2. Do Not Touch Your Face
Your hands are dirty and oily. When you touch your face the grime and oil from your fingers gets on your face. This clogs up your pores, affects the natural oil production of your face and messes with the natural pH levels of your skin resulting in breakouts.
It sounds incredibly simple, but this is by far the most important rule and the easiest one to break. Humans touch their face extremely often without ever being aware of it. You must consciously avoid this if you want clear skin.
3. Wash Your Pillowcases Regularly
While you sleep billions of dead skin cells from your face rub off onto your pillowcase. These skin cells attract dust mites and these dust mites shit. All three of these things are terrible for your skin.
The simple solution to this is to wash your pillow cases every single time you do laundry. It takes 1 extra minute and will significantly improve your skin.
4. Only Wash Your Face With Water
This was the final piece of the puzzle for me, and I’d like to thank Mikael Syding for the introduction to this idea.
Similarly to touching your face, washing your face with soap or face wash or using lotions and creams fucks up the pH balance of your face and messes with oil production causing breakouts.
This is the reason many people have the same experience I did where using Neutrogena or similar products only makes your face worse.
Your body is a genetically engineered self-regulating organism built to survive over millions of years. Let it do its job and regulate.
No soap, no face wash, no moisturizer, no harsh chemicals, no acne.
5. Shave Properly
If you are prone to acne you most likely have sensitive skin. This means you are more inclined to get irritated by shaving and are more prone to ingrown hairs which can cause acne. Shaving also may result in increased oil production from the skin which lead to increased clogged pores.
If you have this experience and do not have to be clean shaven I suggest you buy a good beard trimmer and trim regularly rather than shave (this is what I do).
If you have to shave here are some recommendations.
- Always shave "with the grain"
- Use a razor blade with 2 blades or less, change blades often
- If you don't need a pre-shave balm or an after shave, don’t use it (See Rule #4)
- Shave after your shower & then wash your face with water only
Bonus: Get Sun
I’ve found that my skin is always better in the summertime. Whether that is due to weather or sun is unclear but I have found that being in the sun in small doses results in less oily skin and less acne.
Some reading I’ve done suggest this is temporary and actually results in the skin producing more oil in response but I have not found this to be true.
Additionally, the sun stimulates Vitamin D production which causes immune cells to travel to the outer layer of the skin where they can help repair damage.
This is more of a personal experiment you are going to have to do. For me getting regular small doses of sunlight before applying Sunscreen (Zinc Oxid) if I am going to stay in the sun for a longer period of time improves my skin.
I hope that these 5 Rules will help you to improve your skin and avoid the confidence crushing experience with acne that I dealt with for a significant portion of my life.
