Austin Kleon - No doomscrolling

A newsletter from the desk of Austin Kleon
no doomscrolling

Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. A peek inside my pandemic diary.

  2. When I’m writing a book, I can’t think about it at night if I want to fall asleep, so I need to wind down with a good book that’s not in the genre I’m writing in. Comics and fiction work well, but what I really love is rock 'n' roll histories, like Please Kill MeVan Halen RisingThe Dirt, or Meet Me In The Bathroom, or rock memoirs like Crazy From The Heat — the trashier the better! I just started Peter Hook’s Substance: Inside New Order.

  3. I was delighted to shoot this video of me talking about how much artist Corita Kent has influenced my work.

  4. The pandemic has me experimenting with online events and re-learning how to sign books.

  5. A handy tool that has made my life better in a small, nerdy way: the pencil extender.

  6. Parents: We’re having (some) fun here playing Exquisite Corpse.

  7. TV: I have fallen in love with Pamela Adlon’s Better Things.

  8. Music: My favorite living songwriter, Owen Kleon, released his newest single, “Emoji,” and my second-favorite living songwriter, Bill Callahan, released his new single, “Pigeons.” Both are pretty darned great. Callahan will be releasing a song from his forthcoming album, Gold Record, every week until its release in September. (If you’ve never heard his work, here’s a Spotify playlist of my favorite songs.)

  9. RIP to a couple of old mensches: Milton Glaser and Carl Reiner

  10. Your assignment this week: No doomscrolling!
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy some of my books.
