Hello and welcome to RWD Weekly Newsletter edition 418.

Last week I said that the longer we go through our status codes the less I know... and this week is no exception.

Status code 418 is possibly the greatest status code of all time, and I'd almost prefer this over a 200.

From the MDN articles
 
The HTTP 418 I'm a teapot client error response code indicates that the server refuses to brew coffee because it is, permanently, a teapot. A combined coffee/tea pot that is temporarily out of coffee should instead return 503.

I kid you not.

These were created in 1998 and 2014 as April Fools jokes and have remained as part of the Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol.

In 2017 Mark Nottingham made official requests to Node.js, Go, Pyton, ASP.net to remove the 418 I'm a teapot codse from the codebase. In response, a fifteen-year-old Shane Brunswick created our feature site this week, Save Error Code 418 and stated

“It's a reminder that the underlying processes of computers are still made by humans. It'd be a real shame to see 418 go...”

The site took off with Reddit exploding and twitter trending with #418.  In response to this Mark started the process of making 418 marked as a reserved HTTP status code.
