Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. The virus is messing with our sense of time.

  2. I’m reading Zadie Smith’s new mini-collection of essays, Intimations, Seymour Papert’s The Children’s Machine, and Alison Gopnik’s The Gardener and The Carpenter.

  3. I’m in love with quilting.

  4. Two cool book announcements: Roxane Gay has edited The Selected Works of Audre Lorde and Brian Eno’s A Year With Swollen Appendices is finally being reissued. (It’s been out-of-print for forever. I put it at the very top of the recommended reading list in Show Your Work!)

  5. How have I survived a dozen Texas summers without knowing the word “estivate”?

  6. Tip: next time there’s a museum show you’re interested in, check the website for a family or classroom guide.

  7. Podcast: My wife got me hooked on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail. I recommend her interviews with Andrew Scott, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Alain de Botton, and Olivia Laing.

  8. Poem: “Life, friends, is boring. We must not say so.”

  9. Ear candy: Harry Styles’ cover of “Sledgehammer” has me listening to Peter Gabriel’s original on repeat. (Did you know The Brothers Quay did some animation work for the video?) I was also inspired to throw together a Spotify playlist of my favorite cuts with The Memphis Horns.

  10. Aggravation is my muse.
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy a book or a t-shirt.
