Dear reader,

No matter how school reopenings unfold, a frightening truth is emerging: Public education faces unheard-of challenges. With coronavirus cases still rising in many areas, schools are struggling to balance safety concerns with pressing academic, social and emotional needs of students. “The result could topple the already fragile ecosystem of schools in this country and devastate public education for years,” Hechinger Report’s Barbara Kantrowitz notes in an essay that appears in full on CNN.com.

Returning to school buildings in the midst of a pandemic is fraught, and in some areas of the country, many more Black families than white are choosing to keep their children remote. At the same time, some 19 to 23 million people could face eviction unless comprehensive relief measures are taken, leading to further instability for schoolchildren whose lives have already been upended by the pandemic. The stories we bring you this week are as painful as they are important. As always, we want to hear from you.
