What The Elle - Pay Black Women What They’re Worth

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day. Yes, 226 days into the year. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

A tweet by Nicole Tinson that says, “TODAY is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day. One of the biggest forms of allyships in the workplace is disclosing your salary with Black women. If you're getting paid $115k and a Black woman is getting paid $85k (and doing double the work) she needs to know so she can decide how to move.”

Pay Black Women What They’re Worth

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day — the day an average Black woman must work into 2020 to get paid what an average white man did in 2019.

If “August 13” doesn’t spell it out clearly enough, here are a few other ways to think about it:

Today is 226 days into the year.

The date is calculated because Black women make an average of 62 cents for every dollar white men make.

The gap hasn’t substantially moved in decades, and if it continues at its current rate, Black women won’t see pay parity until 2130.

Until then, the average Black woman will lose out on $1,962 each month, which adds up to $23,540 a year — or nearly $1 million over a 40-year career.

A new report by Lean In talks about why this wage gap happens in the corporate world. Two words: systemic racism. Senior leaders are less likely to interact with or promote Black women (even though Black women ask). Black women are also affected by day-to-day discrimination and microaggressions — and don’t see strong allies in the workplace.

And because 2020 is 2020, the pandemic is magnifying all of these inequities.

So what can we do?

We can talk openly about salaries, and be vocal where we see unfairness.

We can encourage our workplaces to do the work to fight systemic racism.

If we’re not Black, we can routinely check our own workplace behaviors and biases.

And we can celebrate Black women’s achievements and advocate to pay Black women what they’re worth, wherever we are.

Rooting for us all,

Companies owned by Black women have grown by 50% in the past five years — and a lot of those women say that being undervalued in their workplace pushed them to become entrepreneurs. Let’s celebrate their ambition by shopping at a business owned by a Black woman today.

A metaphor that illustrates how women are less likely to get promoted up the ladder — starting from the very first promotion to management level. That broken rung then affects the rest of their career trajectory. Black women’s careers tend to be especially impacted by broken rungs.

Small $$ win of the week

“I have savings that will last me 2–3 months. My goal is to build a living fund, aka save enough money that I can still pay my bills while I build my business. The pandemic made me realize I was spending my money on the wrong things.”
