  • As of Tuesday night, Joe Biden — 32 years, three presidential campaigns, and two vice presidential terms after his first bid for the White House — is officially the Democratic nominee for president of the United States. [Twitter / Peter Baker]
  • Biden, 77, received the nomination after his home state of Delaware concluded a virtual roll call featuring 57 US states and territories on the second night of the Democratic National Convention. [Washington Post / Toluse Olorunnipa, Chelsea Janes, Felicia Sonmez, Colby Itkowitz, and John Wagner]
  • The roll call itself was, in a word, delightful, and has been widely heralded as an improvement over the traditional in-person convention format. Delegates used their brief appearances to showcase their home states and territories as they announced their votes. [Slate / Christina Cauterucci]
  • And Biden’s nomination was put forth by an unconventional speaker: Jacquelyn Brittany, a security guard in the New York Times building whose first meeting with Biden in January went viral. [Vox / Aja Romano]
  • Though Biden clinched enough votes to seal the nomination in June, Sen. Bernie Sanders was also nominated and received votes on Tuesday. The nomination was purely symbolic, in accordance with convention rules. [CBS News / Christopher Brito]
  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was one of two people to deliver a nominating speech on Sanders’s behalf, used her brief remarks to recognize “a mass people’s movement working to establish 21st-century social, economic, and human rights.” [Vox / Li Zhou]
  • Next up, Sen. Kamala Harris will accept the party nomination for vice president this Wednesday. Former President Barack Obama, former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren are also scheduled to speak. [CNN / Eric Bradner and Dan Merica]
  • The convention will conclude on Thursday, when Biden is set to officially accept the Democratic nomination. The Republican National Convention will begin on Monday. [Vox / Ella Nilsen, Nicole Narea, and Emily Stewart]

Mutiny and a coup in Mali
  • In Mali on Tuesday, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta announced his resignation and the dissolution of the government and parliament on TV just hours after his arrest by Malian soldiers. [BBC]
  • Keïta’s arrest, as well as that of Prime Minister Boubou Cissé, is part of a military coup that unfolded Tuesday after a mutiny at a military camp near the capital. Mali experienced a similar coup just eight years ago, in 2012. [CNN / Melissa Bell, Mamadou Tapily, Zamira Rahim, and Helen Regan]
  • The troops that ousted Keïta say they have no desire to seize power for themselves, and that new elections will be organized “within the reasonable time limit.” [Reuters / Tiemoko Diallo]
  • Government corruption and a flagging economy have both given rise to popular dissatisfaction in Mali, which appears to have manifested itself in Tuesday’s mutiny. [Guardian / Jason Burke]
  • The coup, which reports indicate was bloodless, has been widely condemned by the international community, including by the European and African unions. Both groups have demanded that Keïta and other prisoners be released. [Al Jazeera]
