The Essentials
Super Coffee

Good afternoon and welcome to a jam-packed edition of The Essentials. Let’s kick it off with an icebreaker.

Today, former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett joined Sweetgreen’s board. Name a piece of advice you’d give to Sweetgreen, but not to a president. My answer? “What this needs is a little more Caesar.” Send me yours.

Of all the things people said they miss during the pandemic—sports, dressing up, smiling—I don’t think I ever once heard “go to the movies.” But I know movie lovers are out there, so this section is dedicated to getting you hyped for all the films being released the next few months.

August: Bill & Ted Face the Music, the latest installment in the Bill & Ted series, will be released on-demand and in select theaters on August 28.

September: Christopher Nolan’s latest mindbender, Tenet, arrives at some theaters on Labor Day Weekend. On September 4, the live action Mulan will go straight to Disney+. And we close out the month with spy flick The King’s Man and Janelle Monáe in Antebellum

October: We missed you, Wonder Woman—she’ll be back on the 2nd. On the 16th, Jordan Peele will scare the living bleep out of us again with Candyman. Finally, Gal Gadot makes her second appearance in this paragraph with the mystery Death on the Nile.

November is all about action with James Bond in No Time to Die and Black Widow in Black Widow. Pixar’s Soul does not fit with my action theme but it is indeed coming out the 20th.

Excited yet? For dessert, here’s the new Batman teaser that just arrived this weekend.

Stay Sharp

Stay up to date: This may sound a little absurd, but there is a newsletter that tracks the most heavily edited Wikipedia articles each week. It’s actually very useful, helping you keep tabs on major events and global conversations.

Get lost in a hole: Books are great, but have you tried articles? You feel less bad when you don’t finish them. Check out these three: 1) The enduring whiteness of the true crime genre 2) the wildest insurance scheme in Texas history and 3) why success won’t make you happy

Gadget upgrade: There are two people in my life I blindly trust with electronics: my brother and my roommate. Their recent picks? My brother got this portable charger for every member of our family. My roommate, a professional musician, tried practically every wireless headphone on the market before landing on these.

Five ways to look at cool places on the internet:

  1. The Infatuation continues to impress as a resource for the rapidly changing bar/restaurant scene in the U.S. The other day, I searched for “bars in NYC that have outdoor TVs so I can watch sports” and they literally had that exact list.
  2. Travel the world virtually with these high-quality interactive tours of cities (h/t Rachel C.).
  3. Check out the most wishlisted off-the-grid Airbnbs in the U.S.
  4. The Atlantic is publishing beautiful shots from each state every Sunday of 2020.
  5. Fool around on Zillow.

New doc: I can’t open up a new browser tab without seeing another glowing review for the documentary Boys State on Apple TV+. It explores a program that brings together high school boys across Texas to form a representative government from scratch. What could go wrong?

Soundtrack: As much as I never want to hear “Mr. Brightside” again, I’ve been enjoying The Killers’s latest album. It’s full of epic anthems that make you wish concerts were still a thing. Also, tell me if you’re getting a lot of Springsteen vibes in there—it’s all I can hear.

Dept. of Cool Ideas

I love buying stuff just as much as the next guy with an unreasonably heavy credit card. But did you know you can also rent much of the same stuff and not worry about what to do with it when you’re done? Here are a couple of rental options:

I’ll end with this: If you do want to actually buy something, always go to Facebook Marketplace first.

The Little League World Series would have been finishing up right now if not for the pandemic. The entire event always brings me back to my baseball days (shortstop, tremendous power to the opposite field), and it makes me sad that kids won’t be able to compete this year. Look how freaking happy they are.

Thanks so much for reading, and please share The Essentials with a friend if you think they’d enjoy any of the recommendations we share. See you back here Wednesday.
