15 Conversations That Meant the Most

It’s September 1 ... and I simultaneously don’t know why it’s not 2022 yet, and wonder where the summer went.

It was a strange summer for all of us, for sure. Here at Ellevest, a busy one.

As the summer started, we launched a first-of-its-kind money membership designed to get more money in the hands of women+. (Yes, I’m pretty proud of the team for that.) We’ve also been answering your money and career questions in workshops and on social. And — like most everyone — we’ve been navigating our money during coronavirus, taking part in the national movement for racial justice, and thinking about the upcoming election.

That’s a lot. And the conversations that resonated most through this strange summer-not-summer are fascinating because they are literally about all of the above.

By the numbers

A new survey talked to people who are working remotely with kids at home during the pandemic. It found that men were three times more likely than women to be promoted. (The study did not cite statistics for non-binary people.)

•	Got promoted: 34% of men, 9% of women
•	Got a raise: 26% of men, 13% of women
•	Took on a new leadership role: 29% of men, 10% of women

What we’re reading

•	The WNBA has been leading the fight for social justice for a long time — including a fight for equal pay (which they won).
•	Employee resource groups are a way for underrepresented people to get support and push for change. But they’re also “unpaid, invisible work done primarily by women and people of color.”
•	As a woman in the male-dominated field of mathematics, Dr. Eugenia Cheng used her professional skills to tackle sexism. “How to Undo Gender Stereotypes in Math … With Math” is the smartest thing we’ve read all week.
•	A bunch of big tech companies filed paperwork to go public last week. So how inclusive are they?
•	NASA astronaut Jeanette Epps is the first Black woman to join the crew of the International Space Station. 🚀
