This week, Popular Information:
Exposed that a neo-Nazi leader had donated more than $2000 to the Trump campaign.
Uncovered the corporate conflicts of Trump's new coronavirus advisor, Scott Atlas, including his board seat of a medical venture capital fund.
Analyzed thousands of FEC records, revealing that the NBA's league sponsors had donated $3.3 million to support the reelection of members of Congress who received an "F" rating from the NAACP.
The impact of Popular Information's reporting was recognized this week when it was named a finalist in the 2020 Online Journalism Awards in the category of Excellence in Newsletters. You can read more about Popular Information's work in 2020 here.
But how do we grow the audience for this newsletter to maximize its influence? If you talk to “experts,” they will tell you that the only way to scale a newsletter is to pay for Facebook ads. People have handed over a bunch of personal information to Facebook for free, so now Popular Information should pay Facebook for the privilege of targeting people based on that data.
We are not going to do that. The purpose of this newsletter is to inform the public. Sending more money to Facebook is not consistent with that goal.
But we can scale Popular Information without Facebook. Our secret weapon is YOU. We don’t need Facebook’s targeting because you already know who would be interested in this newsletter. Facebook is trying to sell access to a social network that belongs to all of us.
