There have been plenty of anecdotes about how college students have been reacting to the triple stresses of the coronavirus pandemic, the economic recession and racial unrest. Some high-quality data now sheds light on what is happening across the country. Some trends are worse than we thought and other putative trends haven’t been backed up by the data (yet). The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center launched a new report last week called “Stay Informed,” which it will be updating monthly. The first take -- on summer terms at 2,700 colleges and universities (compared to 3,600 institutions in its usual fall and spring term reports) -- came out last week.

Key Findings 
  • There were fewer Black students at every type of undergraduate institution during the summer of 2020 compared to a year earlier, though the drops were largest at institutions that cater to low-income students. 

  • Institutions that serve more affluent students (four-year public and private nonprofit universities) had an increase in enrollment. 

  • Institutions that serve low-income students (community colleges, for-profit and rural) had a decrease in enrollment. 

  • There was an unexplained drop in male students while the number of female students increased slightly. Online institutions didn’t see an increase in summer school enrollment among undergraduates but there were more graduate students at online schools.
