September 2020

The Academy of American Poets invites students living in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Tribal Nations, in grades 9 through 12 to enter artwork to be considered for the 2021 National Poetry Month poster competition, the twenty-fifth anniversary of this literary celebration, now the largest in the world. The winner will be selected by judges Maira Kalman, renowned illustrator, and Renée Watson, New York Times-bestselling YA author and poet. The winning student’s artwork will be printed on 100,000+ copies of the official April 2021 poster, which will be distributed for free to teachers, families, schools, libraries, and classrooms nationwide, and viewed by millions of people during next year’s celebration.

Submissions to the 2021 poster competition are now being accepted through 10/30.

This month’s poetic term is translation, referring to the art of transferring a poem's meaning from one language to another. Read more on Poets.org.
For Every One” is a four-part film featuring a performance by New York Times-bestselling author Jason Reynolds. The film tracks Reynolds as he performs “For Every One,” a poem about the trials and triumphs of a creative life. Pair the video with this writing prompt from Reynolds, the answers to which will be collected into a book at the end of the school year.
