Substack will lose to a bootstrapper ambitious enough to compete with it.

This is my biggest "bet" I've ever disclosed publicly. Everyone is in love with Substack right now, so I expect to get some flak for it.

But when I was reading more about the company and trying to understand the model, it just doesn't add up.

For those who don't know, Substack is a company that has quickly become the center of the "paid email newsletter" market. They focus on allowing writers to easily setup an email list, website, and members-only access, to allow for content to be consumed on a subscription model instead of the traditional ad-driven one ^[1].

But why does their stated goal, to "better align writers incentives with their audience", not match their actions?

Why does Substack control everything about your newsletter, from the domain it lives on to the email you have to use?

In this week's issue, we'll investigate the paid newsletter market, and look at who's competing with Substack right now and why there's room for you to chew off a piece.

We'll also look at:
