Switch Weekly - #198: A calamitous Nintendo update
Spoiler: Gannon wins. Web version | Unsubscribe Hi, here's Switch Weekly #198 with your Nintendo round-up. I think it's fair to say the Age of Calamity reveal earlier this week took us all by surprise. Now, I'm not particularly taken by these musou hack-and-slash style games, but this new Hyrule Warriors entry seems to be doing enough to get a wider audience interested. This new entry essentially fills in some of the narrative blanks of the Breath of the Wild story, detailing what happened in key battles 100 years prior to the events of the Switch launch day smash. It's kinda neat to think that this game, along with the upcoming Zelda Switch sequel will mean we've got a Breath of the Wild trilogy of sorts now! Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launches in November, and the trailer is linked below. Oh, as promised, some thoughts from me on Raji, having now spent a bit of time with it: It's a beautiful looking game, with a strong, well-realised Indian theme throughout — a setting we don't really see explored much in games. The platforming is fun enough, but the combat can feel a bit confused in places, and I'm seeing some slight performance issues in places too. Anyway, big round of applause for Mario — it's 35 years to the day since the first Super Mario Bros game hit store shelves in Japan. Take a bow Nintendo, you've created something with a real lasting legacy. Talking of Mario, the 3D All-Stars Collection is out next week - the full list of releases is below as usual. Finally, hello to all you new subscribers joining us. Happy to have you here. 😊 That's enough from me, thanks for reading, and enjoy the issue, ▶ Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - A story 100 years before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — Yep, here's the trailer to the new Hyrule Warriors game I mentioned above. This update video also provides a brief update from Eiji Aonuma on how the BoTW sequel is coming along, the TLDR being: keep waiting. Smart of Nintendo to have this ready just before Christmas though, give the Zelda fanbase something to chew on whilst waiting for the next big flagship entry. Oh, and Nintendo will be sharing more info on this game real soon. Nintendo // YouTube Nintendo is reportedly ‘telling developers to make their games 4K-ready’— Via this Bloomberg report comes word that Nintendo is planning new hardware for early next year. This lines up with recent chatter around a model that could upscale to 4K. In fact, I've seen one or two devs hint at such a thing, so this seems like it may be becoming something of a sure thing. Andy Robinson // VGC Today's the big day - Happy 35th Anniversary, Mario! Ryan Craddock // Nintendo Life ▶ Nintendo Survey: The State of Switch 2020 Results — If you didn't read the survey results when I published them earlier this year, here they are in video form — settle in though, as this is half an hour of delving into Switch stats. Switch Weekly // YouTube Ubisoft will re-release Scott Pilgrim for Switch following 6-year absence Andy Robinson // VGC REVIEW Gleamlight — Yikes, this review does not hold back: "worse than the majority of bad games", "No physical release means you can't throw it in a bin". Stuart Gipp // Nintendo Life REVIEW Paradise Killer — "a fantastic detective game". Nicola Ardron // God is a Geek REVIEW Spiritfarer: A beautiful management game about dying too mired in frustrating busywork — I saw a lot of praise for this one, so paused when I saw this well-reasoned critque that was less than glowing: "it gets too bogged down with busywork that it loses sight of what it wants to say. It’s easy to fall in love with at first sight but the more it drags on and frustrates, the more its charm fades.". Here's an alternate take from Nate Ellingsworth writing for Switch Player. Alan Wen // NME REVIEW RPG Maker MV — Described as an infinitely replayable "creative outlet that any role-playing fan should own". Thomas Haroldsen // Nintendad The Mario 35th Anniversary announcements were strange, but not really in a good way Mel Curtis // Nintendad Nintendo's secrets are continuing to leak, revealing its unknown history Patrick Klepek // Vice
