Switch Weekly - #195: Nintendo News
Nindies. Web version | Unsubscribe ![]() Hey, here's issue #195 of your weekly Switch round-up. After a few relatively quiet weeks on the eShop, this week is PACKED. We've got over 30 games hitting the store including Hypnospace Outlaw, moon, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and more. The full list is in the issue below as usual. Oh, a little aside - thanks to reader Morgan for her suggestion that I tag games that have demos available with an emoji in the same way I do for physical releases. In the upcoming games section, look out for any releases with a 🎮 emoji - this means you can give it a try. By the way, if you haven't digged into the eShop recently I recommend taking a look. Lots of great stuff on sale right now. The stuff from the Indie World showcase is the highlight of the week for sure, with a ton of great little games coming to Nintendo's platform. Come and discuss it over on the Switch Weekly Discord. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the issue, P.S - A few of you may have received an email from me earlier this week in error. I just want to apologise to those who received it erroneously and thank you for your understanding. Sending emails to a big group of people can be a tricky thing to get right at times. ▶ Indie World Showcase 8.18.2020 — Earlier this week Nintendo shared a 20-minute showcase of upcoming indie titles and oh boy was this presentation filled with goodies, including a handful of games releasing on the same day (always a nice surprise). Highlights include A Short Hike, Raji, Spiritfarer, a two-player update for Untitled Goose Game and more — really worth catching up if you ain't, as I'm sure one or two of these will end up on your wish list. Nintendo // YouTube Nintendo will hold a special ‘briefing session’ in September — This meeting in mid-September (for investors and members of the press) is set to take place in Tokyo, rather than at the company’s headquarters in Kyoto. I've seen a fair bit of chatter suggesting that it would make sense for a Direct (or equally big announcements) to take place before this briefing. See below. Andy Robinson // VGC Nintendo Direct: ‘Strong possibility’ of Friday live stream, journalist claims — ...the source has a good track record. Andy Robinson // VGC 30 for 30? — I'm sure you're all aware of the current spat between Epic and Apple regarding App Store policies (specifically the 30% cut). Well, here's a bit of history for you that draws a line connecting that 30% amount and....Nintendo. M.G. Siegler // 500ish REVIEW Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time — This hack and slash game based on the much loved cartoon is getting mixed reviews. John notes that it "could ultimately do with some more focus on its core elements" but adds that "there is enough here to be enjoyable" - particularly for fans. Chris Carter, writing for Destructoid, wasn't so keen however, noting that some 'glaring faults' result in something that "doesn't really succeed as an action game or a Samurai Jack adaptation". John Rairdin // Nintendo Wordl Report REVIEW Arcade Archives Super Punch-Out!! — Another in Nintendo’s line-up of vintage coin-op titles making its debut outside the Arcade. This one is "more eminent than it is entertaining" but purely from a preservation sense, I'm glad it's here. Chris Scullion // Nintendo Life REVIEW Peaky Blinders: Mastermind — "there isn’t much here if you aren’t hip to the source material" and even then the author notes the experience is a bit of a simple one. Rhett Waselenchuk // COG Connected REVIEW Helheim Hassle — "a comedic yet macabre adventure where players must the use of all manner of different body part combos to complete challenges", oh and intrestingly the author mentions getting both Tim Schafer and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth vibes from this. Tristan Ogilvie // IGN The Eternal Castle: Remastered is a remake of a game that never existed — In last week's issue I noted that 1987s 'The Eternal Castle' was coming to the Switch - turns out, such a game never existed. The eShop listing however does everything it can to make you believe it did. This game has an intriguing and more importantly fabricated history, and just glancing at the eShop listing fooled me. This article from early 2019 explores the PC release, but everything here is relevant to the Switch release too. Looks neat, even if I do feel a tad foolish for falling for the fake sentimentality here. 😅 Jeff Ramos // Polygon Animal Crossing and the Stories it Tells— The world has changed, and as a result Animal Crossing has had its moment as this 'place' to tell stories: "New Horizons helps tell stories, it is the platform. The creativity and the love fans have both old and new is what truly makes the stories within Animal Crossing". Jeffers Haile // Uppercut INTERVIEW Burnout Paradise Remastered dev on Switch release: challenges, high performance, more Nintendo Everything Can you still enjoy a remastered game if you didn’t play the original? Ellie Rebecca // Super Jump Magazine Gary Whitta on Animal Talking: "a hobby that spiralled wildly out of control” Matthew Handrahan // gamesindustry Pokémon UX designer asks fans for feedback on ‘what drives you mad about our games’ Andy Robinson // VGC
