Hey y’all,

Welcome to my favorite season. Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. The best books I read this summer. (And spring and winter and the past 13 years.)

  2. About the time I received a letter from Dr. Oliver Sacks.

  3. The gorgeous, Thoreauvian, and oddly erotic documentary, My Octopus Teacher, and this essay about how weird octopuses truly are.

  4. An interview with the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube. (See also: The Speed Cubers documentary on Netflix and my ode to solvable problems.)

  5. RIP Virginia Tufte, scholar and mother of my friend, Edward Tufte. I’m currently reading her book, Artful Sentences: Syntax as Style. (And ET has a new book coming soon.)

  6. RIP Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I like how she talks about work and family in her rules for living, and I enjoyed the documentary about her, RBG.

  7. Before his death, Lou Reed made this playlist of 27 songs. (Here’s a Spotify playlist of his 100 favorite songs.)

  8. Richard,” a comic from Allie Brosh’s Solutions and Other Problems, her followup to Hyperbole and a Half.

  9. I sing in praise, once again, of an open dictionary.

  10. David Lynch on getting ideas.
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy a book or a t-shirt.
