Delta Explodes, Van Halen Dies, and QAnon Gets Banned
No images? Click here Good morning. It's Wednesday, Oct. 7, and we're covering Hurricane Delta, the vice presidential debate, and the death of a rock legend. Have feedback? NEED TO KNOWDelta Slams the YucatanHurricane Delta is set to pound Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula today, after having undergone explosive (and unexpected) intensification over the Caribbean Sea yesterday. The system grew from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in just over 24 hours, the quickest growth by an October hurricane since Wilma in 2005. As of early this morning it had slowed slightly to Category 3 status. Delta is on track to make US landfall along the Louisiana coast between Friday and Saturday, though the cone of uncertainty is still fairly wide (real-time trajectory). Forecasts suggest cooler coastal waters may slow the system, with models currently projecting it to arrive as a Category 3, or potentially even Category 2, storm. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) has declared a state of emergency in advance, with many coastal cities still recovering from September's Hurricane Sally. Do you ever wonder whether there's a "better" side of a hurricane to be on? The answer is yes. Pence vs. HarrisVice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) meet tonight in the vice presidential debate, live from the University of Utah (9pm ET, major networks), and moderated by USA Today's Susan Page. Typically footnotes during presidential election cycles, this year's debate has taken on heightened significance. President Trump (74 years old) and Democratic nominee Joe Biden (soon to be 78) are the two oldest presidential nominees in US history, with the former still battling COVID-19 (but recovering) and the latter having had his share of health issues. The event also follows an ill-received first presidential debate, with many eager for a more substantive policy discussion. Some have called it the most important vice presidential debate ever. A plexiglass barrier will separate the candidates from each other and the moderator. Separately, Trump has signaled he's planning on attending the second presidential debate Oct. 15, as scheduled. Eddie Van Halen DiesEddie Van Halen, legendary guitarist and founder of the eponymous rock group Van Halen, died yesterday from throat cancer. It was revealed the 65-year-old Hall of Fame musician—who survived a bout with tongue cancer in 2002—was diagnosed with the disease in 2015. Voted the No. 4 guitarist of all time by Guitar World—just behind Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, right ahead of Eric Clapton (see list)—Van Halen was known as a virtuoso, credited with reviving the genre of hard rock throughout the 1980s. His group, despite swapping lead vocalist David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar in 1985, dominated the charts for nearly two decades, selling 80 million albums worldwide and notching eight multiplatinum records in the US. The group was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Watch Van Halen's best solo riffs here. Separately, Johnny Nash, singer of "I Can See Clearly Now," died at age 80. GOOD VIBRATIONSNeed some good vibrations to deal with stress? Now you could head beachside with a cracked coconut in one hand and a good book in the other. Or you could check out a different type of good vibrations altogether. Apollo Neuro is a new wearable device that improves your body's resilience to stress, so you can focus, get to sleep, and stay energized. Chronic stress triggers the sympathetic “fight-or-flight” branch of our nervous system and impairs our ability to recover. Through your natural response to touch, Apollo activates your parasympathetic “rest and digest” response and restores balance. Developed by physicians and neuroscientists, Apollo Neuro uses gentle vibrations to signal safety to the brain, training your body to recover from stress more quickly. The Apollo Neuro wearable works in tandem with a mobile app with modes for Sleep, Focus, Relax, Meditation, and more—so you can decide how you want to feel and when you want to feel it. Apollo Neuro doesn't track your health; it actively improves it. Apollo Neuro has been tested rigorously in multiple clinical trials and is scientifically proven to improve heart rate variability, a key biometric of stress. So check it out today and feel the stress go away. 1440 readers can take an exclusive 15% off your order, don't miss out. Please support our sponsors! Apollo Neuro reverses these effects and helps you bounce back from stress quickly, by activating your parasympathetic "rest and digest" response. Now, we're no neuroscientists, but thankfully Apollo Neuro was developed and tested extensively by leading experts in the field. It's proven to improve our bodies' resilience to stress, and allows you to choose how you want to feel—with options to sleep better, focus, socialize, and unwind more easily. 1440 readers can take 15% off your order—let Apollo Neuro help you take control of your stress today.
