Issue 132 - Secure your Tesla πŸ”’

Software & Hardware updates

Multi-factor authentication is now available πŸ“·

Multi-factor authentication is now available on your Tesla account. Once configured, you can see the list of all devices you have authorized on your Tesla account page. I use Google Authenticator for 2FA but you can use any third-party authenticator out there. Log into your Tesla account, go to Account > Multi-factor authentication > Manage, and scan the QR code. Easy, right? If you haven't done it yet don't leave it for later and do it right away!

Model Y acceleration boost upgrade experience πŸ“Ή

A few days ago Tesla announced a new acceleration boost available via a paid software upgrade for the Model Y dual motor.  In this video, @klwtts puts it to test in their non-performance Model Y to see if the difference is really noticeable.

More rumors about the Model 3 heat pump entering in production soon

First, it was the smaller trunk, then Tesla placed a huge order for heat pumps from a Chinese supplier, and finally,  a leaked a list of significant changes coming to the Model 3, including the Octovalve and heat pump. Now, Tesla’s official Parts Catalog is showing different Model 3 'Cabin HVAC' system instructions for after October 5, 2020. Still not officially confirmed but it seems pretty real.

Pin-to-open the glovebox available in China πŸ“Ή

Pin-to-open the glovebox just became available in China after the latest software update. It seems it may be coming to the US with version 2020.40.* which doesn't seem to have started rolling out to the fleet just yet.

Birdseye view coming soon

Birdseye view, please? Coming right up if you have FSD, or so said Elon Musk on Twitter this week after being asked by @teslaownerssv. This is a pretty standard feature in other vehicles, so the community has been asking about this for a while now.

Range & Solar

How much does towing affect range?  πŸ“·

From the article, thank you u/supomgloljk for sharing!

  • Model X 75
  • Towing a 2,700 lbs trailer, about 5,000 lbs when loaded
  • At 65mph, gets on average a 5 to 1 ratio (e.g. in a 200 mi trip can't go further than about 40 mi without charging
I got an email from Tesla earlier this week, their Solar Roof is now available with financing. Tesla's Solar Roof is certainly not cheap but the price is very competitive and if you could get it for less than what you are paying PG&E per month, would you? If you're in the market for solar (roof or panels) and we have been helpful in any way, please consider using our referral code to get $100 of credit.

In this video, our friends at Living Tesla share their experience cleaning their solar panels after a year of grime and ash from fires and how that translates to extra money generated.

Tesla ownership

New owner? Check out this PDF and a list of must-have accessories we've put together

We recently updated our PDF for new Tesla owners which comes in very handy when you first get your hands on the steering wheel and realize you're still driving a car, but a very different one from what you're used to. The PDF also contains some good tips that even experienced Tesla owners may not know about. Finally, check out our must-have recommended accessories for new owners (links by model can be found at the very end of the PDF). A quick few ideas here:

"Teslas have been flat in terms of depreciation in 2020 vs. the average depreciation 1%/month for the aggregate used car market. This is due to many factors, but OTA updates have created a customer experience unlike anything in the automotive market before that is creating tailwinds in the value of used Teslas."

I got my car in 2017 and although the hardware is not completely up to date, I definitely feel I have a better car than when I purchased it. Leaving aside the new features received via OTA updates or the paid retrofit (HW3), just the driving experience with Autopilot by itself is so much better today than three years ago.

What the acronym?

As a Tesla fan, I find myself sometimes having to remember what are all those acronyms, here is a list of the ones you can find in this issue.

  • 2FA -  Two-Factor Authentication
  • QR -  Quick Response (code)
  • HVAC -  Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
  • OTA - Over-the-air (software updates)
