EU investigates Instagram over handling of children's data - BBC News

Article
  • Instagram is being investigated by Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner over its handling of children's personal data on the platform.
  • The investigations stem from complaints that Instagram made contact information on business accounts publicly visible to anyone accessing the app.
  • The Irish regulator is investigating whether Facebook has a legal basis for processing children's personal data and if it employs adequate protections and restrictions on Instagram for children.
  • "Instagram is a social media platform which is used widely by children in Ireland and across Europe," said Graham Doyle, a deputy commissioner with DPC. "The DPC has been actively monitoring complaints received from individuals in this area and has identified potential concerns in relation to the processing of children's personal data on Instagram which require further examination."
  • In February 2019, data scientist David Stier analysed profiles of almost 200,000 Instagram users across the world.
  • Instagram business accounts require users to display their phone numbers and email addresses publicly, meaning that personal data belonging to many users is visible to other Instagram users.
  • The same personal information was also contained in the HTML source code of web pages accessed when using Instagram on a computer, meaning that it could be "Scraped" by hackers.

Another Mysterious Jetpack Man Was Spotted Flying 6,000 Feet Over LAX - Yahoo Lifestyle

Article
  • Airline crew members spotted a person in a jetpack flying at an altitude of 6,000 feet high near Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday.
  • This is the second such jetpack sighting near LAX in six weeks.
  • Stop us if you've heard this one before: On Wednesday afternoon, crew members on an airliner flying near Los Angeles International Airport once again spotted a person in a jetpack gliding at an altitude of 6,000 feet high, a few miles northwest of the flight hub.
  • It's the second time in six weeks that aviation professionals have observed someone in a jetpack flying near LAX.At 1:45 p.m. PST, the crew of the LAX-bound China Airlines Flight 006, a Boeing 777 coming from Taipei, alerted air traffic controllers of the strange sight.
  • China Airlines 006: "We saw a flying object like a flight suit jetpack at 6,000."LAX Tower: "Was it a UAV or was it a jetpack?"China Airlines 006: "Like a jetpack. Too shiny. It's too far."LAX Tower: "006 heavy, roger, thank you Emirates 215 heavy there was a jetpack reported about 13 miles ahead."The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to CNBC it received the report, and promptly alerted local law enforcement.
  • The FBI is already digging into a similar recent escapade at LAX. On August 29, a pilot for American Airlines Flight 1997 spotted what he believed to be "a guy in a jetpack" just 300 yards to the left of his plane, which was soaring over the busy airspace above the airport at an altitude of about 3,000 feet.
  • Needless to say, flying in a jetpack in the vicinity of a commercial airliner is an extraordinarily dumb thing to do.

8 million Americans slipped into poverty amid coronavirus pandemic, new study says

Article
  • The number of Americans living in poverty grew by 8 million since May, according to a Columbia University study, which found an increase in poverty rates after early coronavirus relief ended without more to follow.
  • Although the federal Cares Act, which gave Americans a one-time stimulus check of $1,200 and unemployed workers an extra $600 each week, was successful at offsetting growing poverty rates in the spring, the effects were short-lived, researchers found in the study published Thursday.
  • The federal stimulus saved about 18 million Americans from poverty in April, he said, but as of September, that number is down to 4 million.
  • The total number of people in the U.S. living in poverty is 55 million, including the 8 million who joined their ranks since May, according to the Columbia researchers.
  • Columbia researchers tracked monthly poverty rates in the U.S. between February and September, or before and throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The results of the Columbia study are underscored by another recent study published by the University of Chicago and the University of Notre Dame, which found that within the last three months alone, 6 million Americans entered poverty.
  • The Columbia study found that poverty levels were somewhat improving in the last month, while the joint study said they were worsening.

Millennials Control Just 4.2 Percent of US Wealth, 4 Times Poorer Than Baby Boomers Were At Age 34

Article
  • The millennial generation, people born between 1981 and 1996, make up the largest share of the U.S. workforce, but control just 4.6 percent of the country's total wealth.
  • Although it's not unusual for younger age groups to have less money than their elders, the average Baby Boomer working in 1989 during their early 30s had quadruple the wealth of what millennials have at that same age today.
  • Millennials, who are the median age of 32 today, control just 4.6 percent of U.S. wealth, far behind the 21 percent Boomers had at about that same age a generation before.
  • The richest one percent of Americans own more than 50 percent of the equity in corporations and mutual fund shares, Bloomberg notes.
  • Upper-middle class Americans have seen a 10 percent drop in their equity interest in companies, as the richest 10 percent of U.S. adults now hold 88 percent of all stock shares.
  • While the top one percent of Americans held onto 30.5 percent of U.S. wealth in June, the bottom 50 percent of the entire country went from having just 3.6 percent down to 1.9 percent.
  • White Americans control 84 percent of the country's wealth, compared to 4.1 percent held by Black Americans.
