The most visited state': Trump, Biden barnstorm Pennsylvania as key state on final campaign weekend.

Trump won Pennsylvania in 2016 by less than 1% of votes cast, or about 44,000 votes. The state is among the most important of a half-dozen battlegrounds because its 20 electoral college votes could be the decisive tipping point for either candidate to reach the 270 needed to the White House, according to political experts and party activists.

Trump campaigned on the country’s energy independence and argued that Biden would hurt production by shifting away from fossil fuels. Trump told a rally Oct. 20 in Erie that Biden would “abolish Pennsylvania energy” and that mining industries would be “totally extinguished.”
...
Biden says he doesn't want to ban fracking, although he wouldn't allow it on federal land. He seeks to end federal subsidies for oil production while spurring development of renewable energy. As a Scranton native and longtime resident of Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said he expected to win the Keystone State.

After Trump accuses doctors of coronavirus profiteering, medical professionals push back.
New York Times (Moderate Left) •

At a rally in Michigan on Friday, President Trump repeated an extraordinary and unfounded claim that American doctors were profiteering from coronavirus deaths. “You know our doctors get more money if somebody dies from Covid,” Mr. Trump said, adding that in Germany and other countries, deaths are characterized differently if there appear to be multiple causes.
...
That prompted a backlash from organizations including the Society of Hospital Medicine, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “The suggestion that doctors — in the midst of a public health crisis — are overcounting Covid-19 patients or lying to line their pockets is a malicious, outrageous and completely misguided charge,” said Susan R. Bailey, the president of the American Medical Association.

The United States recorded over 99,000 coronavirus cases on Friday, a level reached for the first time since the pandemic began, as well as more than 970 deaths.

From November 5 to December 2, people will only be permitted to leave their homes for a short list of reasons, such as childcare, work, exercise, medical issues, or shopping for basic needs. Bars and restaurants will only be allowed to provide take-out options and non-essential stores will have to close.

In-patient beds available through the National Health Service (NHS) are starting to decline on "an exponential curve," [Chris Whitty, England's chief medical officer] warned. "The progression is steady and we now have several hospitals with more in-patients with COVID than we did during the peak in the spring."
...
Prime Minister Johnson said an "overrunning" of the NHS would be a "medical and moral disaster beyond the raw loss of life," and pointed to COVID-19 case models, which he said suggest "that unless we act, we could see deaths in this country running at several thousand a day." "Doctors and nurses would be forced to choose which patients to treat — who would get oxygen and who wouldn't, who would live and who would die."

In the early morning hours on Saturday, U.S. military forces rescued an American held hostage by a group of armed men in northern Nigeria, the Pentagon announced. No U.S. military personnel were injured in the raid. Following the Pentagon announcement, President Donald Trump tweeted that it was a "big win for our very elite U.S. Special Forces."

Multiple news stories identified the hostage as 27-year-old Philip Walton, an American citizen living in Massalata, a small rural village in Niger near the Nigerian border, who was abducted by a group of six armed gunmen on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
...
According to ABC News, American and Nigerian officials did not believe that the hostage-takers were affiliated with terrorist organizations, but because hostages are often sold to those groups, the decision was made to act swiftly.

Why are increased Covid-19 case counts being attributed to President Trump's campaign rallies? |

With Trump headed back to Michigan, study says rallies led to 30,000 more COVID-19 cases.

Researchers at Stanford University released a statistical model that suggests previous Trump rallies resulted in 30,000 more cases of COVID-19. "The communities in which Trump rallies took place paid a high price in terms of disease and death."
...
The researchers reached their conclusions by comparing 10 weeks of data on case rates in counties where 18 Trump rallies were held between June 20 and Sept. 26 to counties with similar demographics where no rallies were held.
...
The researchers did say there was reason to believe that more recent rallies — which the study did not include because not enough time had elapsed to determine their effects on case numbers — may have resulted in a smaller effect because of some indications more rally-goers were wearing masks. The campaign has done temperature checks, offered hand sanitizer and provided masks to attendees but it's clear from photos taken at the events that many who go do not wear masks or practice social distancing.
