Coronavirus infections are at the highest levels yet, making the upcoming holiday season fraught with worries over safety. But by taking a few precautions and setting different expectations, people can lower their risks substantially.

Melissa Hawkins, an epidemiologist and professor of public health at American University, describes her family’s detailed, science-backed plan for Thanksgiving. Hawkins explains how making a few adjustments to what a family does before, during and after the holiday meal will make any gathering a much safer experience. She won’t be getting much help with the dishes this year, but that’s a small price to pay to keep friends and family safe.
