Liz WillenDear reader,

With an outgoing president contesting the election and the coronavirus dominating headlines, there’s been little time to focus on what President-elect Joe Biden might do when it comes to education, although there’s no shortage of opinions.

One issue we’ll be watching closely here at The Hechinger Report is the future of community colleges. We recently reported that the coronavirus has meant significant drops in enrollment for community colleges, which educate about 40 percent of America’s college students.

But here’s an unknown: Will there be a new focus on these institutions once Jill Biden, a community college professor who intends to keep teaching, becomes first lady? What are your predictions for education in a new administration? As always, we love to hear from readers.

PROOF POINTS: COVID has been bad for college enrollment — but awful for community college students

College going — whether in-person or remote — among first-time beginning students is down a sharp 16 percent this fall compared to a year earlier. At two-year community colleges, which educate about 40 percent of America’s college students, it was worse.

PROOF POINTS: What happens when private student information leaks

OPINION: Some advice for a new administration: Appoint a woman of color as U.S. secretary of education

None has ever held this role, so let’s send a message to our children.

OPINION: Donald Trump and the white achievement gap

White Trump voters either put aside what they learned in school to vote for the president — or they never learned it at all.

OPINION: U.S. public schools should be federally funded
