Risk-Takers Pushing Through | Advice From Venus Williams and Bill Gates | Venture Capital Reform?

As tropical storm Eta makes landfall in Florida, it’s beginning to feel a lot like winter where I am in the Northeast. This time of year is usually reserved for reflecting, brainstorming and debating major life decisions, but nothing about 2020 has been usual, and we’ll instead be focusing on U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s plans for Covid-19, taxes and the minimum wage. How much he gets done will likely depend on the runoff elections in Georgia, where those between the ages of 18 and 21 made up 21% of the vote. When I took to the streets of New York City to capture images of those celebrating the Biden-Harris victory, I wondered how the change in seasons might affect entrepreneurs.

In my role overseeing newsletters at
Forbes, I’ve seen a rise in interest in career management and personal growth. There’s been a newfound look at morning routines, impostor syndrome and job-interview tips, courtesy of Bill Gates. However, it was Venus Williams’ advice to not let fear take over and push through has resonated most for me.

Entrepreneurs are pushing through, too.
They’ve pushed to close the gap for underrepresented women of color in tech and to disrupt, venture capital, especially in Europe. Meanwhile, as more than 30 million American small business owners wait for another round of coronavirus relief, they’ve spoken out about what they want from Washington, D.C.
