Forbes - Moderna’s Vaccine Results

The Covid-19 crisis continues to worsen in the U.S.as confirmed cases have surged past 11 million. But there was also a ray of hope today: biotech company Moderna announced preliminary data from its phase 3 clinical trials of its mRNA vaccine, which found that the vaccine was almost 95% effective at preventing Covid-19. The news comes on the heels of last week’s announcement from Pfizer, which found its mRNA vaccine to be about 90% effective. So what does this news mean? Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said today that if the vaccines are as effective in real life as they were in clinical trials, the Covid-19 pandemic could end next year. But not everyone is so optimistic. WHO Director Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus said in a video today that a vaccine alone will not be enough to end the pandemic, and countries will have to continue contact tracing and other public health measures for a long time to come.
