Forbes - The Power Of Optimism

“You can win; as long as you keep, your head to the sky” - Sounds Of Blackness “Optimistic”

On this National Entrepreneurs Day, optimism among Black and Brown business owners, those hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, is at a low. But prioritizing optimism, as well as peace and wellness—whether you are a small business owner or employee, or a person of color in America—is crucial. Here are three ways to do so.

The phrase “new normal” has been used to describe the events of 2020, but nothing about this year has been normal.
It’s OK to not be OK, to not perform at your best on dozens of Zoom calls a day while continuing to see Black men and women die at the hands of police or from a deadly virus. Unplug for at least an hour a day and read something that helps you escape all that’s going on in the world.

Practice self-care. You may be inclined to work more to keep your mind occupied, remember: “you cannot pour from an empty cup.” Take some time for yourself.

Remain optimistic. It may sound tone-deaf, but
studies show that optimism can have a significant positive effect on mental and physical health. Focus on the better tomorrow that we are all working to create.

For(bes) The Culture member Shelly Bell is the founder of Black Girl Ventures, an organization helping Black and Brown female founders access social and financial capital. Since launching in 2016, Bell has trained more than 5,000 entrepreneurs, held more than 300 events for emerging business leaders and has helped scale over 200 businesses. “Resist being average,” says Bell. “This is my three-word rebellion. In order to do that you have to get a little disruptive. Disrupt your thinking. Disrupt your internal comfort. Disrupt your logic. Discover something new. You cannot raise or make a $1 million-plus dollars without adapting a new way of thinking.”
