How To Kickstart Your Productivity For The Day | Inside Dolly Parton’s Covid Vaccine Contribution| And More

Over the last few weeks, I’ve opened this newsletter talking about women who are “the first”—like Congresswoman-elect Cori Bush, or vice president-elect Kamala Harris—and I’m pleased to report that the theme of “first” is continuing to this week, too: on Friday, the Miami Marlins appointed Kim Ng as their general manager, making her the first female GM in Major League Baseball history.

As many baseball fans and sports scribes alike have pointed out, Ng’s hiring is cause for celebration, yes, but it’s also woefully overdue. She’s been working in baseball for 30 years, a career that has included time in the front offices of the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers; she’s worked in the MLB central office, too, and first applied for a GM role 15 years ago.

“After so many times, you might feel deflated,” she said of not getting the job in previous instances. “Even if it didn’t happen, I was always going to feel good about my career. I wasn’t going to see it as a failure. You pick yourself up and go back at it.”

Cheers to that!

Featured Story: Inside Dolly Parton’s Donation Towards Making A Covid Vaccine A Reality

Country music icon Dolly Parton has long made philanthropy a part of her career, but a recent $1 million donation could prove to be among the more influential gifts she’s given: via the Dolly Parton Covid-19 Research Fund and in partnership with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the money was allocated to partially fund the research for Moderna’s Covid vaccine, which Moderna said this week is close to 95% effective in preventing infections.

ICYMI: Stories From The Week

Since Alexander Hamilton was named Treasury secretary in 1789, there have been 77 secretaries in the role, all of whom have been men. That could change with Lael Brainard, Sarah Bloom Raskin, or one of the other women who president-elect Joe Biden could nominate for the position.

Moldova has elected the country's first-ever female president, with former Prime Minister Maia Sandu overwhelmingly claiming 57.7% of the popular vote on Monday.

Actress Charlize Theron is speaking out on gender violence through an initiative called "Together for Her" that is working to bring even more awareness to an issue that has worsened amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The female-led activewear brand Superfit Hero announced that they will phase out their smallest sizes—extra-small, small and medium—in favor of products size large through 7X permanently.

Conservative commentator Candace Owens sparked a debate about gender norms after criticizing singer Harry Styles, who wore a dress in his cover for Vogue. (He's the first man ever to appear alone on Vogue's cover in 128 years, we note.)

November is National Family Caregivers Month, and data shows that Millennials’ extended singlehood and delays in having children are likely to intensify the challenges of balancing a career and children with caring for aging parents.

Check List

#1: Channel Newton’s first law of motion. An object in motion will stay in motion, so starting your day with a walk around the block or even some squats while your coffee brews is a good way to kickstart your productivity for the day.

#2: Pick both. For Jessica Carter Altman, the choice between practicing law and pursuing a music career wasn’t either/or: she recorded an album while in the beginning stages of her law career and realized “there are no rules” to a fulfilling career

#3: Remember what you love about your job. If work and life are feeling simultaneously boring and stressful, make a list of the moments at work (pre-pandemic and mid!) that have energized you. It will help you tap back into your sense of joy.
