 Exploding myths: How diversity in academia has deepened our understanding of slavery

A conversation between historian Daina Ramey Berry and communications scholar Ernest J. Wilson III

America is in the midst of a racial reckoning. Old narratives are being reexamined and in many cases overturned. Increasing diversity in academe has helped shape new understandings of slavery and structural racism. What new truths are being discovered, which myths have exploded and where is the next generation of racial inquiry going?

Daina Ramey Berry, chair of the History Department and the Oliver H. Radkey Regents Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin, wrote one of the first stories published by The Conversation US. The article explored the myths of slavery and has been read more than 2 million times. She is now working on a book about the myths of slavery for Beacon Press following the tremendous reception to her article. She has deep professional insight into how old narratives around slavery are changing at all education levels.

Ernest J. Wilson III, professor of communication and political science, and founder and director of Third Space Thinking, University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, will interview Dr. Berry. Dr. Wilson, a member of The Conversation's board of directors, is the former dean of Annenberg and is deeply committed to cultivating and amplifying scholars of color for the public good.
