Healthcare Under 30s | Combating Covid-19 | Arecibo Telescope Collapses

It’s been a tough year, but we’ve got 30 reasons for hope on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Healthcare list. This exceptional group of entrepreneurs, researchers and clinicians are working to solve some of the most pressing healthcare challenges. From a telemedicine CEO tackling mental health to an advocate mobilizing Black communities to expand access to health services to a physician researcher inventing new food to help repair the gut of undernourished children. The youngest honoree, Thomas Khairy, is 16 years old and has already been published in the New England Journal of Medicine

Also, be sure to check out the
Forbes 30 Under 30 Science list, which includes some awesome research that could have applications for healthcare, such as the latest developments in Crispr technology and molecular computers that can modify cells.

How This Year’s 30 Under 30 Is Combating The Coronavirus

Prakriti Gaba was an internal medicine resident working at New York Presbyterian Hospital in March when the first cases of Covid-19 started coming in. Gaba, age 28, who was in the hospital’s intensive care unit, saw firsthand the devastation of the early months of the pandemic. She is just one of the Covid-19 champions on our Under 30 lists this year. From volunteering their personal time, to tackling additional research projects, to having to nimbly adapt their businesses to the ongoing pandemic, these inspiring entrepreneurs, researchers and academics are showing that they can still get incredible things done during a global crisis.

Noteworthy

Researchers have found evidence suggesting that Covid-19 was present in the U.S. in December 2019, weeks before even the first cases in Wuhan, China have been publicly reported.

UnitedHealth Group said its 2021 revenues will reach $277 billion next year.

The U.S. has secured
more than 1 billion doses of six different Covid-19 vaccines

Scientists have used
Crispr gene-editing to remove an HIV-like virus from monkey DNA.

Some prestigious
scientific journals are unveiling “open access options,” but the fees are still out of reach for many researchers, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
