Welcome to week two of COZY DAYS, a four-week series on finding comfort during the holiday season. Don't miss a special surprise at the bottom of this issue, and don't forget to forward this issue to a friend who could use a little GNI in their life each week.

note from the editor
Morning
,
A couple months ago, my partner and I exchanged gifts and, without planning, got each other the same thing: new versions of the games we loved most growing up.
I gifted him a chess set (before The Queen’s Gambit even aired… can you believe?) and he gifted me a retro edition of Scrabble. We laughed about it — it was like the year we gave each other coffee-themed gifts, but instead of hypercaffeinating each other, we did the exact opposite: we gave each other permission to slow down and play.
It shouldn’t have really been a surprise. In a year of such heaviness and more adult decision-making than any of us ever bargained for, comfort and downtime (if we’re lucky enough to have them) have skewed in the other direction, back to the fun-seeking activities we enjoyed most as kids.
In March, we baked.
In April, we played video games.
And in May (and every month since), we puzzled.
For the first time in our adult lives, play has resurfaced as a driving force in our home time. (In fact, it's what our sibling brand, Whiled, is all about.) We’re turning dinner tables into puzzle canvases, cross-stitching our feelings, scratching the back of the bookshelf for Bananagrams, and meeting friends on Animal Crossing islands until we can hang IRL again.
This issue of GNI is dedicated strictly to play: the ways we’re slowing down, the games we’ve mastered, and the new activities we’ve turned into hobbies over the past 270 days or so.
1️⃣ My first recommendation is to take this issue, and write all the ideas that speak to you on a piece of paper — then cut that sheet into strips and put each idea, folded, in a jar to get you through winter. Don't forget to add a few of your own personal favorite just-for-fun activities. Every time you’re bored or restless, reach in and give yourself permission to play, make, create, and spend time with your inner child.
2️⃣ As you contemplate how you might use your downtime in the coming days, my second recommendation is to read our recent interview with Chanel Miller. In March of this year, Chanel’s book, Know My Name, was our GNI book club pick as the world came screeching to a halt. Months since we finished the book, Chanel’s voice and creativity continue to emerge as an incredible comfort through These Times — from the drawings she shares on Instagram to Childhood, a podcast she made with her sister, Tiffany.
One thing Chanel said about exploring the heaviness of 2020 through drawing stuck out to me: "To me, creating is a conscious act of listening to myself... Everything I make these days is an act of honoring what I feel in ways that I didn’t before." Imagine how much we might learn if we always took the time to slow down, disconnect, and listen to ourselves.
3️⃣ My third piece of advice is to queue up this actual playlist we made you and put some time on your calendar to just create or play this weekend. We made this as a soundtrack for your activities — from play dough squishing, to clay-earring making, to a heated game of Catan online with friends.
Without further ado, in addition to the playlist of songs, we made a GNI 2020 nonmusical play list — all the ways we’ve slowed down and played this year, outlined below. I hope it brings you comfort, nostalgia, and maybe an escape route the next time someone suggests you catch up over Zoom — why not play a game together instead?
Until next week,
Tyler Calder

weekly picks
all the ways we've played in 2020

- A little old, a little new... 🤔 "We recently made a personalized Guess Who? game by swapping in our friends and celebrities for the characters. We changed the rules so that you can only ask questions that are about their personality or ridiculous, like “Do you think they could be a successful TikTok star if they tried?" GNI team member Jenna also did this, using this season's Bachelorette contestants, which I thought was pretty funny, too." - Mary Anne, Community Team
- A DIY project that doubles as a batch gift... 🕯 "In the beginning of quarantine I bought a bulk bag of soy wax and I’m finally putting it to use DIYing candles. If you don't want to make candles yourself, you can also hop on the DIY twisty candle trend if you buy some taper candles in bulk. Both make great gifts!" - Olivia, Community Team
- How to help your loved ones cultivate care in 2021… 💆♀️ Idea: In a year of stress, why not gift some new Rituals? Perfect for the person on your list who's always taking care of others (even if that's you), Rituals reminds you to slow down and cultivate calmer more meaningful routines every day (we like this set). Order by 12/14 for delivery by 12/25 and get free shipping on orders over $50. #SPONSORSTHING
-
A slow-paced activity that yields very pretty results... 🌸 "I pressed my wedding bouquet flowers and thought it was a nice way to preserve those memories forever. It was also pretty easy! Next time I have fresh flowers, I want to try this method using silica, which preserves more of the color." - Alisha, CEO/Founder
-
For a low-stakes creative release... 🎨 "I've been doodling using the Procreate app in evenings recently. I love it a lot but some nights I just really need a screen break, so I'm slowly transitioning to these doodle-y crayons for grownups and this paint-by-numbers that's something I'd actually hang when I'm done." - Tyler, Content Team
- Some board games to stock up on... 🎯 Dutch Blitz if you like games for speed. Quarto if you like a game that involves some strategic thinking. Rummikub if you're looking for a two-player game. And Azul for a satisfying — not cutthroat — result. For board game gifting inspiration, we've rounded up some of our favorites here.
- An unexpected way to play... 🌀 "Thanks to my toddler, I now play with sticker books again. Yes, STICKERS. Not sure if there's a grownup version of the satisfaction of stickers, but these art therapy nail decals come pretty close." - Carey, GNI Team
🐌 Psst... if you're hoping to gift puzzles this year, Whiled is offering GNI readers 15% off all orders of $50 or more with code WHILEDFRIENDS through Monday, 12/7/2020 at 11:59 EST.

👾 Playing...
"My friends played Among Us a couple times this year (and I heard it was recently a hit as a Lounge gathering!). It’s like Werewolf or Mafia, but virtual and cute. A bonus — if you’re a bit Zoomed out — is that it involves a voice call or messaging, not video." - Mary Anne, Community Team
"Animal Crossing was my favorite this year because it's a fun little escape from everything else. AND IT'S SO CUTE. I played a lot while moving because my real home was a disaster but my Island was looking cute AF. It also teaches you great life skills like paying off your loans and mastering the stalk exchange lol." - Katrina, Partnerships Team
🎤Singing along to...
"If you love a good sing-along, might we recommend this wholesome, family-friendly one? Not going to lie, I had a blast with it this week. (Bonus: Ryan Seacrest looks extra festive in a beard and holiday sweater.)" - Jenna, Content Team
🤗 Listening to...
"Tiktok made me do this, but I recently started listening to video game soundtracks from my childhood when I need to do focused work. For some reason, my brain still associates these songs with intense concentration, so yes, I'm writing this while listening to the Mario Kart soundtrack." - Tyler, Content Team
📺 Watching...
The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. (Sorry, we had to. It really is that good.)
