Gifts That Give Back | Happily Ever After | The Power Of Pets

Hello and welcome to a new edition of the Upturn, the newsletter born out of the desire to do something that will improve the communities within our reach.

This week we published the yearly list of the world’s
100 most powerful women. My colleagues Maggie McGrath, who leads the efforts to compile the list, noted that the metrics used are fairly traditional: power equals money, populations, media mentions and measurable impact. But power isn’t just a statistic, it’s an action. And by those standards, she writes, few people were more powerful in 2020 than Stacey Abrams.

More stories showcasing examples of leadership below.

In the
Upside, the stories of two women who left their corporate jobs to follow their respective passions: a former investment analyst who launched a rom-com podcast series, and a former consultant who is creating pandemic-proof manicures.

In
Up-And-Coming, two examples of helping others. One through buying gifts, one through dining at a restaurant.

In
Uplifting, we focus on animals. It’s now scientifically documented that pets help people feel less lonely but, for those who prefer wildlife, here are some award-winning photos from around the world.

Finally, in the
Wrap-Up, the numbers making a difference this week are 15, 29, 449.
