Farewell from Henry

Album Daily
#59 - The Week of January 4 - 8

If you missed the "New Era" email I sent out earlier this morning, you'll want to make sure you read it.

The TLDR; is that I'm passing Album Daily along to three great guys who will continue to give you all tremendous music recommendations.

It has been an amazing ride, and I feel honored that you have partaken in this fun project of mine.  If you want to stay in contact with me, here is my Twitter.

Now, since this is my last email, I'll be doing something fun.  Today, I will recap my top 5 albums of 2020.  You won't want to miss these.

For one last time, turn your speakers up!

Love, Death, and Dancing

Genre: Alternative/Electronic
Release Date: June 12, 2020
Top Tracks: Time, Old Enough, Mara, Anyone, Circles
Similar Artists: James Blake, Bon Iver

Far and away my favorite album of 2020.

Every. single. song. is. incredible.

When you listen to an album 4-5 times per week all the way through, it has to be deep, infectious, and a masterpiece.  Love, Death, and Dancing is easily all three.

Dreamland

Glass Animals

Cover 2

Genre:  Alternative
Release Date: August 7, 2020
Top Tracks: Tokyo Drifting, Heat Wave, Your Love (Deja Vu), Tangerine
Similar Artists:  MISSIO, Phantogram

I really don't think I need to say much about this album.  If you listen to SIRIUS radio, you've heard multiple songs from this album at the top of the ALT 18, and that shows the consistency of this release.

Bone Structure

Ron Pope

Genre: Americana
Release Date: March 6, 2020
Top Tracks: Dodge Aries Wagon, Wait and See, Practice What I Preach
Similar Artists: The Avett Brothers, Joshua Radin

Maybe it is the fact that I'm having my first child this month, but I listen to "Practice What I Preach" at least once a week.  Ron Pope is what Americana music should be.  He teaches life lessons through complete musicality.

HALLELUJAH!

Super Duper

Genre: Electronic
Release Date: November 11, 2020
Top Tracks: We Had Everything, Quiver, All On You
Similar Artists: Kygo, Zedd

Not only does this album put me in the zone, it makes me hit a superhuman level of work output.  Okay, I'm kidding, but really, this album gets my blood flowing so much that I oscillate between working and dancing.  It's an interesting scene, thankfully I'm working from home so nobody has to see it except for my dog.

Ugly is Beautiful

Oliver Tree

Genre: Alternative
Release Date:  July 17, 2020
Top Tracks: Again & Again, Bury Me Alive, Cash Machine
Similar Artists:  bbno$, lil aaron

I don’t know if a cover has ever fit an album more perfectly than for Ugly is Beautiful. Oliver Tree is an enigma, but surprisingly, this cover makes tremendous sense. Sitting comfortably with pink balloons, his signature bowl cut, and bell bottom jeans, Tree’s face has a vindictive look against the fiery backdrop. Contrast that with his innocent and playful mix of clothing and aesthetic, and who knows what to think? During “Joke’s On You!”, it’s impossible to not visualize this cover, as it’s exactly the sound I would picture playing in the background while the fire rages. As if the cover didn’t solidify the point, Tree’s music is as exciting as can be. Nothing sounds the same, each track is new, different, and unconventional. Some will be thrown off by this, but for those who can appreciate the creativity, it is a gem.
