The other day, a reader wrote to me worried about the deep partisan divisions in this country and what they might mean for his children and grandchildren. He was comfortably retired, but worried about their future. That email came Tuesday, a day before the events at the U.S. Capitol. I didn’t have a good answer for him then, and I certainly don’t have one now. I’m worried, too. In an upcoming edition, we’ll take a closer look at the disconnect between the buoyant stock market and our troubled economy and society. This week in our Retire with Money Facebook group, a member asked, “Would you still pay for Medicare Part D even if you do not take any prescription medicines?” The answer was a resounding yes. For starters, Medicare imposes a lifetime late enrollment penalty if you don’t sign up for Part D when you’re first eligible. You can get a cheap plan now — one member found one that only costs $6.50 a month — and then switch to more comprehensive coverage when the need arises. You might not take any medications now, but that could change. One member expressed surprise at the new prescription she got as a healthy 72 year old.
