  • President Joe Biden has reactivated a Trump-era emergency facility for the detention of unaccompanied migrant teenagers, drawing the ire of immigration advocates. [The Washington Post / Silvia Foster-Frau]
  • The administration defended the reopening of the Carrizo Springs, Texas, facility as a necessity, given rising numbers of kids arriving at the border and fewer being expelled after Biden reversed some Trump-era policies. They described it as a temporary fix for a broken immigration system that will take time to remake. [Business Insider / Josh Haltiwanger]
  • The administration said the facility was reopened because the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s beds are full due to pandemic restrictions preventing all from being used. Carrizo Springs can hold 700 minors. [Business Insider]
  • Press secretary Jen Psaki pushed back against comparisons to Trump’s “kids in cages” policy, saying children are neither being separated from their parents nor expelled from the country. [The Daily Beast / Justin Baragona]
  • But concerns about temporary shelters have been persistent over the years, with reports of abuse and lack of oversight predating Trump. Carrizo Springs has a better reputation than the infamous Homestead facility, but questions about reunification timelines and the treatment of children remain. [Vox / Nicole Narea]
  • Immigration advocates and some Democrats in Congress have criticized the Biden administration, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She said the “carceral framework” of the immigration system is unacceptable, regardless of the party in power. [Axios / Jacob Knutson]
  • The Biden administration is attempting to expedite the release of these teenagers into the custody of American relatives. But this has been complicated by flight cost, which the Department of Health and Human Services is now directing government officials to cover. [The Associated Press / Nomaan Merchant]

Israel’s Netanyahu uses vaccines for diplomatic power
  • Israel has vaccinated the highest percentage of its citizens of any country in the world, boasting a strong inoculation campaign. Now, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to use that as diplomatic leverage, offering its surplus to nations that back Israel. [The Associated Press / Josef Federman]
  • Netanyahu is planning to give doses to 15 countries, including Italy, Chad, Honduras, and Hungary, all of whom have either renewed diplomatic relations with Israel or have plans to move their embassies to Jerusalem. Other government ministers were kept unaware of the plan. [The Times of Israel / Toi Staff]
  • The move comes as Israel is receiving international criticism for not including Palestinians in the vaccine campaign. Netanyahu ordered the delivery of thousands of vaccines to Palestinians this week, reportedly after pressure from the US State Department. [Jewish Telegraphic Agency / Cnaan Liphshiz]
  • Defense Minister Benny Gantz, a centrist who has run against Netanyahu and now serves with him in a coalition government, slammed Netanyahu’s vaccine offer to allied nations as a personal power grab done behind the backs of other government officials, calling for vaccine shipping to stop. [The Associated Press / Josef Federman]
  • Netanyahu temporarily suspended the program after Gantz’s attacks and a letter from the country’s attorney-general. Some countries have already received doses. [The Times of Israel / Toi Staff]
