FTT Update: Today's Newsletter Is All About Women
Hi all, Julie here. Happy International Women's Day! In honor of this glorious day, we are only covering female related stories in today's newsletter. We also have two job postings in our Career Corner, from Square's Cash App and True Link, and both companies would love to have females in these roles.
The only other programming note I have is that a new episode of Tux Time is out, where Ian and I talk about SPACs, Square buying TIDAL and the creator economy.
Betterment's 401K Deal
Betterment (which now has a female CEO) is making its 401k offerings available to clients of HR and benefits platform Zenefits, which reaches more than 10K businesses. Not only will this benefit customers of Zenefits, but it will help Betterment’s customer acquisition strategy. Betterment for Business currently has 700 401k plans on its platform, and the number of plans grew by nearly 30% during the pandemic, the company told Finledger. It counts larger startups like Boxed and Casper as customers.
Betterment is not gaining any additional revenue through the Zenefits deal, and the fee structure for business clients on Zenefits will mirror what it charges other 401k clients, which includes a recordkeeping fee per employee, as well as an assets under management fee.
Starling Grabs New Funding
U.K.-based Starling (also has a female CEO) announced that it has closed £272M in funding at a pre-money valuation of £1.1 billion. The startup is in a highly competitive space, but one with a large market. The company said it will be using the money to continue its growth. In updated financials posted recently, Starling said it generated £12M ($16.6 million) of revenue in January, up 400% compared to a year ago, with an annualized revenue run rate of £145 million. It posted operating profits for a fourth consecutive month, and net income currently exceeds £1.5M per month. Starling, founded in 2017, has now passed 2M accounts, with 300K business accounts among them (note: these are opened accounts, not necessarily active accounts).
Google Promoting Women
Google announced a range of programs and grants worth $25M on Monday to fund works of nonprofits and social enterprises that are committed to empowering women and girls. It also announced that Google.org will invest an additional $1M to help underserved women in India.
On top of the funding, I was very excited to learn about some of the educational aspects of this program. Google has partnered with Nasscom Foundation to bring digital and financial literacy to 100K women farmers in India, and is creating a program called “Women Will” to enable and support 1M women entrepreneurs. Google has also developed a feature that gives female entrepreneurs the ability to highlight that their business is led by a woman across Google Search and Google Maps listings.
Two awesome job postings today for you today:
- Investment Associate, True Link Financial: The Investment Associate is a key member of the portfolio management team and plays a critical role in supporting the portfolio management function. The Investment Associate works closely and collaboratively across multiple teams within the organization to support day-to-day asset management responsibilities. This includes owning the responsibility for collecting, managing, and analyzing data to facilitate portfolio management functions such as rebalancing, managing liquidity, and reporting on performance. This position is ideally based in the Bay Area, Denver, or NYC.
- Product Manager (Banking), Cash App: Cash App is one of the fastest growing financial brands in the world. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic app with over 30M monthly active users. The Cash Banking Team is focused on making banking services relatable, instant, and accessible for everybody. In this PM role within Banking, you will lead the Cash Card experience including customer acquisition, personalization, fulfillment and establishment. As growth continues to accelerate and Cash App continues to enter new financial services, Square is looking for incredible people to help lead product development. You will help drive strategy to build Cash App into a leading provider of banking services and empower customers with better ways to grow and utilize their money. This role is critical because it entails building incredible features to redefine the banking experience, as well as establishing the deep level of trust required to serve as Square’s customers' financial institution of choice.
