Going Beyond Black History Month With Our State Of Black Entrepreneurship Project

“Black entrepreneurs, nobody did us no favors / Nobody gave us s**t, we made US!” - Jay-Z, “I Did It My Way”

It’s a big day for For(bes) The Culture. Today we launched our State of Black Entrepreneurship hub. Throughout the year, we’ll feature historical profiles on forgotten Black entrepreneurs as part of our CultureX: The Forgotten series, plus data and new forms of storytelling to assess the state of Black entrepreneurship, and where it’s headed.

Stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, check out our
first CultureX: The Forgotten profile on Joseph Lee, one of Boston’s most successful hospitality entrepreneurs in the late 1800s and early 1900s who invented machines that transformed industrial breadmaking for the next century.

Spotlight On: Jonathan Quarles

“I’m just a country boy from Flint,” says For(bes) The Culture member Jonathan Quarles. But Flint taught him grit, persistence and love for community. The serial entrepreneur and angel investor started his first businesses at the age of 8, and 30 years later, Quarles runs companies including the BTL Group, a consulting firm, and Quartz Water Source, an organization committed to making clean water more accessible. He’s also the author of the book Making Dollars While Making Change, a half memoir, half playbook for entrepreneurs striving to build socially impactful businesses.

News For The Culture

Oprah’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed billionaire filmmaker Tyler Perry helped the couple with housing and security. What few know, though, is how much Perry has also helped Winfrey.

Here’s how
Black women are disrupting the podcast industry, a $1 billion market that’s historically left out diverse voices.

Sheldon James, Stephan James and Shamier Anderson are the three brothers behind Canada's largest fund for BIPOC founders. The CA$100 million fund will invest in fintech, real estate, edtech, medtech and cannabis companies.

These are some of top insights
from speakers at For(bes) The Culture’s inaugural Culturally Accountable Summit.

Music platform
Okayplayer is celebrating Black joy with the launch of “PASSAGE: The Practice of Healing,” a wellness initiative for people of color.

Television host and philanthropist Shaun Robinson is pushing the envelope in the white male dominated media industry and celebrating other Black women who are paving the way for change.

Journalist and award-winning host of her eponymous ABC talk show
Tamron Hall has partnered with beauty brand No7 to bring women back to work.

Here, we remember the prominent
civil rights leader Vernon Jordan, who died earlier this month at 85.

"I’m a big fan of walking away from things that don’t serve me."
