A good mentor is like a vintage pair of Levi’s—hard to find, but life changing. Whether you’re on the giving or receiving end, mentorship is one of the best tools for professional growth. A multi-year survey by Sun Microsystems found that employees who received mentoring were promoted FIVE times more often than people who didn’t have mentors. 

In a recent Harper’s Bazaar article, trailblazers Tory Burch, Ai-jen Poo, Ruth E. Carter, and more shared what they learned from their mentors and what advice they’re passing down to future leaders. For Teresa C. Younger, president and CEO of the Ms. Foundation for Women, mentorship means sometimes being a hypewoman. “You have to give [them] that permission to know themselves and to do what’s right for themselves, not anybody else,” she said. 

Where do you even find a mentor? Lisa Fain, CEO of the Center for Mentoring Excellence, shares a few ideas in an NPR Life Kit episode that include looking at your existing relationships before sending a bunch of cold LinkedIn DMs. And it may sound counterintuitive, but once you find “the one,” don’t explicitly ask them to be your mentor. Use these tips to build the relationship naturally.

More than one third of Americans experience sleep deprivation, which can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart failure. We’ve all been told to get at least seven hours of ZZZs, but if that feels daunting, start by unlearning the common habits that lead to poor sleep. 

Then, check out Matthew Walker’s MasterClass on the science of better sleep. A professor of neuroscience and psychology at UC Berkeley, he’ll teach you how sleep works, the effects of caffeine and alcohol on sleep, and how to prevent sleep “debt.” 

Hacking your chronotype may help you snooze better, too. A chronotype is a classification system invented by Dr. Michael Breus, aka “the sleep doctor” and the author of The Power of When. He identified four chronotypes—the bear, the wolf, the lion, and the dolphin—to show you how to work with your body’s internal clock, not against it.
