5-Bullet Friday

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of “5-Bullet Friday,” a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

What I’m watching —
Princess Mononoke (Amazon: English, Japanese; iTunes). This animated film, from the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli, has thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. I was in Tokyo for its opening weekend in 1997, and I recall being astonished by the neverending lines of theatergoers bending around city blocks, eagerly awaiting the first showings. It dramatically outearned The Lost World: Jurassic Park at the box office, which opened the same weekend. Even if you don’t watch the entire film, the original Japanese trailer is worth watching. Of course, I prefer the Japanese version with English subtitles, but the English dubbed version has excellent voice actors. If you enjoy Princess Mononoke, you might as well pair it with Spirited Away—likely my favorite movie of all time—and for more on the process of storytelling genius Hayao Miyazaki, I highly recommend his accompanying The Art of Spirited Away book.

What I’m celebrating —
UCSF establishes the Neuroscape Psychedelics Division with $6.4M in funding. This is huge news for the burgeoning field of psychedelic medicine. Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris (@RCarhartHarris), a renowned psychedelic researcher best known for his work at the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, is joining Neuroscape as the director of the Psychedelics Division, and he’ll be working alongside the founder of Neuroscape, Dr. Adam Gazzaley (@adamgazz). Prior Neuroscape (previously known as Gazzaley Lab) research has been featured on the cover of Nature (cover image and synopsis, research description), and this dream team is perfectly poised to address fundamental questions about psychedelic therapies largely untouched by research to date. To learn more, please hear my brand-new podcast with Adam, which was released this week. If you’d like to support their ambitious plans, as I am, you can donate cash or securities by visiting this page, and you can donate cryptocurrencies by emailing neuroscape@ucsf.edu.

What I’m reading —
Lost in Thoughtby David Kortava for Harper’s Magazine. I would have dismissed this article were it not for my personal experience with retraumatization and breakdown at a silent retreat in 2017. I recount this experience at roughly 12:11 of my podcast episode on healing from childhood abuse. This is a very well-researched piece on the largely ignored risks of meditation and, more specifically, the enhanced risks of longer retreats for some populations. I still regularly meditate, but I do find there to be a point of diminishing returns, as well as a point (i.e., extended retreats) where the risk-benefit ratio can change dramatically.

What I’m listening to —
The $69 Million JPEGon Planet Money (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast). More exploration of NFTs and related Wild West tech territories. If you think things are already cuckoo bananas, just wait until this new frontier really gets warmed up. I think we’re still in the first inning.

Quote I’m pondering —
“Writing isn’t so bad really when you get through the worry. Forget about the worry, just press on. Don’t be embarrassed about the bad bits. Don’t strain at them. … Writing can be good. You attack it, don’t let it attack you. You can get pleasure out of it. You can certainly do very well for yourself with it!”
Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in a recently discovered note to himself

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could only use one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and didn’t get paid to do so. I focus on nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health, energy, and the immune system. With added pre- and probiotics, digestive enzymes, adaptogens, and more, Athletic Greens is one of the most comprehensive formulas on the market. They heavily invest in ingredient sourcing, finding the most bioavailable forms for optimal absorption so you can have peace of mind alongside a premium supplement. And rather than try to sell you other products, they stay focused on refining this one formula. With 52 improvements over the last 10 years (and counting), Athletic Greens is on a mission to deliver the most optimal, nutrient-dense formula possible. Athletic Greens now has an exclusive offer for my readers—get added immune system support today (also excellent for travel) with a FREE 1-Year Supply of Liquid Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs with your subscription purchase.
