Dear AD PRO Community,

On Tuesday, the latest installment of AD PRO’s Expert Eye webinar series focused on the trends, innovations, and cultural shifts transforming how we live now—and how we may live tomorrow. AD’s Global Features Director Sam Cochran hosted a panel discussion with designers Leyden Lewis and Giancarlo Valle, author and lifestyle expert Athena Calderone, and Suly Weissman, the Design Builder Manager for Thermador.

All the participants were incredibly generous. Athena talked about how, spending more time at home this past year, she’s been learning “to give it more love.” For Leyden, a silver lining of the pandemic period has been the opportunity to build community with the Black Artists + Designers Guild. “We were able to come together and create this amazing brain trust.” Rather than constantly answering text messages and running to appointments, “we were able to focus on what was important to us in design. It was almost like being back in school actually.” Asked about the future, Giancarlo noted that “everything that we knew was happening really just sped up. You started to see a movement towards the accessibility of design and focusing more on what’s closest to you.”

Affirming that idea, Athena ended by emphasizing personal empowerment when it comes to design. “You really do need to trust your eye and trust what you love, and then to teach your clients to trust what makes them come alive. We all see the same art, the same Instagram feeds and there’s this idea that we’re all just absorbing. But how we distill it within is such a magical process.”
