A Father’s Day Gift We All Need

It is a truth universally acknowledged (at least by us) that it’s important for couples to talk about money and take equal roles in their joint finances. But with Father’s Day approaching this weekend, we’ve been thinking especially about its importance for couples whose money management falls into traditional gender roles. (There’s not as much research, yet, about how LGBTQIA+ couples split money, though it does seem like sometimes, it can be hard for everyone to break out of these roles.)

We also often talk about the damaging societal messages that girls and women receive around money, and how we internalize that “we’re not good with money,” and how we lack men’s confidence around money. Even though we are as good or better at math than men and are better investors, earning higher returns.

And so women in relationships with men have traditionally outsourced the management of our money — and particularly the higher-order decisions, like investing — to our partners. Even millennials (61%) and even women breadwinners (62%) allow their male partners to take the lead on long-term financial decisions.

But you know who this might be as bad — or, in some cases, worse — for than women?
